Copy Protected CD's

I love listening to music whilst working on my PC. I really enjoy listening to some of Robbie Williams work and the other day decided i would add to my collection and purchase his Escapology Albumn CD from Amazon UK. I then got a mail from Amazon UK to say that it would be shipped from Germany - strange i thought Anyway i did not think anymore about it.

Anyway i got home tonight and there it was in the post. Put the CD in my D drive kicked up Winamp and Winamp spat its dummy at me > Never had that problem i thought so i just put it down to a minor hiccup so rebooted my machine. Machine rebooted and tried again and then Winamp threw another wobbly when i inserted the CD. Leo not amused by this stage > So i got another Robbie Williams CD out and it played fine on Winamp. So i tried Escapology again and Winamp refused to load. I then noticed a little label on the front which is vertually unreadable saying Copy Controlled and then this silly little media player that i had never heard of popped up and the CD started playing. Leo then starts to put 2 and 2 together and trys WMP 9 and Creative Play Centre both fail to play the CD. Leo now not a very happy bunny >

So tell me guys........My Winamp5, WMP9 and Creative Play Centre2 are all working fine on all my CD's except Escapology. Are there 2 versions of Escapology? one copy controlled and another which is not? I am particulary fond of my Winamp Player and i am going to be damned if am going to use that excuse of a media player which came with the disc.

I am a bit behind the times when it comes to Copy Controlled CD's and i would love someone to tell me what the score is before i rip into AmazonUK for not making it clear on their site what i was buying. >

I haven't ever even heard of a copycontrolled cd that winamp couldn't read. I thought that just meant they couldn't be copied or ripped. If winamp can't play it it means your sound card can't normally read it. That little media player must have a method of decoding the information on the cd. But I still don't understand. If it will play in a normal cd player, winamp should be able to play it. What you could do is go into the winamp preferences, under input plugins click on the main one and make sure it is set to your sound card.

I have a copy protected cd... Command And Conquer Red Alert 2. but no music CD's

Ditch that winamp and get Jetaudio. It will work better.

jet audio - the free version contains ads
Winamp - all free and no ads, plus a lot longer history

Besides that I have used winamp since version 2 came out and I still love it.

tell you what. You come over and try to burn a copy of my C&C game. It will let you burn it, but it leaves out several files so the burned copy can not play.

All the new games are this way.

And I like it, cuts down on piracy.

dvds that you get at the store are 10 gigs, the dvd rs and rws are 4.7 gigs, you cant copy movies, unless you 'special order' 10 gig dvds

I like winamp 2 and haven't had any problems yet with it. Maybe someday i'll change, but not too soon.

Itunes is great. The only thing that would make winamp better would be if it could play the songs i downloaded with itunes.

After digging around the net i think i have found the answer.

Escapology" by Robbie Williams: Reported corrupt in Australia, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, France, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, and in some shops in the UK. This is an EMI release. The labelling on this one is very poor -- the warning text is written in an non-contrasting colour, and it is near impossible to read. It appears that CDs ordered through CD-WOW and Play247 are corrupt; 101CD.com actually carries a warning for this CD, unlike the others. Problems are reported with PCs, MiniDisc players, high-end players (B&O), and several models of car CD player. The Windows player uses ultra-lo-fi 47kbps compressed audio. In the Netherlands, both corrupt and uncorrupt copies are on sale (the uncorrupt version does not have the warning). Most copies bought in UK high-street shops have been reported to be clean; however corrupt import discs have been seen for sale in Music Zone, the Co-op, Our Price and Makro in the UK. Please let us know if you have seen the corrupt version being sold anywhere else in the UK.

The new robbie williams cd is a DVD (atleast if I can assume that you are talking about 'what we did last summer', the live concert from knobsvile.)

I have that album, and encountered the same problem just now, when trying it in my comp. But I usually play my albums on my normal sound system, so did not know about it before.
I have not had time to look through the site myself yet, so if you find a workaround, let me know?

...some more info I just found in "Australian PC Authority" mag.

"The disc loads anti-copying software onto the PC the first time it's played,... via the Windows' Autorun feature".
It (the article) goes on to say that a guy found a simple workaround, which I dont think I am allowed to post here.

Thanks Eric......i found a lot of the same.....anyway i wanged off an email to Amazon UK and pointed out the problems that i was experiencing with the disc and it would appear they have totally ignored the contents and their reply talks about about chasing up and looking into why i have not received the disc. I have got the freakin' disc - all i want is an "uncorrupted version" >

i'd also email the company that makes the cds and tell them that amazon UK sent you a dud cd. they might just send you a new one.

Ok, no worries Leo.
Hope it works out the way you want. But I believe (by reading that article) (APC authority) that the anticopy software is now installed on our computers for that particular album. Not a prob for me, coz I don't usually play cd's on my comp.
Not 100% sure of that though....
