Reporting an issue:

Please include the following for anything found:

  • Exact Windows version \ build (winver.exe)

@Neil

I can't because I use the centre position of the taskbar and start menu :( only with enhanced taskbar enabled it works.
But then after changing the start menu button icon, the menu does not open, you also need to enable the enhanced start menu11.

Only then the start menu does not support my Polish language, so I don't use this option.

However, now in build 1413, the taskbar has been improved and the medium size looks good, for complete success, a small taskbar with the right icon sizes and a full weather widget on the left is missing, as in the attached screenshot :)

I will wait patiently :)

This is quite likely not related the 1.4.2 beta directly, since the behaviour I'm about to mention is present in 1.4.11 (I'm assuming Stardock don't follow SemVer stardards? but I digress)..

Anyways, I was just writing out a new thread to report an issue where I could not get my taskbar buttons to show labels, believing that it was an issue with the "Combine" setting behaviour of the taskbar buttons. While gathering up all my current settings for reference, I noticed an toggle option labeled "Always hide text on buttons regardless of group state", which was turned on.

Based on the layout of the settings window, it seems to have "quick access" options visible on the root "Taskbar" configuration page, with a button labelled "More Start11 taskbar settings...", but then going into that option show the same top setting with slightly different options below, and the "Restart Explorer" button disappears.

I feel like all of these settings could and should be on one page, which should help improve the UX while customising the app behaviour, and possibly even improve the DX for interface maintenance.

another issue:

can't remove folder from recent documents(folder don't exist anymore)

on the beta version. windows (the 1 that messed stuff up) - most(all) things seem to work after some time. still starts with a transparent taskbar but after a minute or so it settles in and works ( have a bunch of posts in the other thread)

im not 100% sure yet but i suspect at times the sys tray "hidden" icons dont all show.

this is my normal list. but earlier it was just the top line (didnt take a screenshot at the time) - (clicking the show hidden icons button ^ )

over all.. just wanted to say thanks for the work devs! i had some pretty frustrating days working with the default taskbar last week. but your hard work makes my experience soo much better :D

If the Stardock team could reduce the start menu button to a small taskbar size and use larger icon spacing, that would be great!

Thanks for the quick support and quick replies :congrat:

@devs.. so on my quest to find a way to add a background colour to the active window on the taskbar (SOoL)... i came across quite a few start11 type applications. and pretty much ALL of them have the same issues with windows 22h2. it looks like you guys solved it first tho!! well done!!

If the Stardock team could reduce the start menu size to a small, which was before KB5022913, without enabling the enhance taskbar that would be great!

I don`t use enhance taskbar because widget icon moves to the center of taskbar.

Would it be possible to add option Close the window on the taskbar instead of closing all windows? It would be useful when we have several open windows of the same application, e.g. Excel

also would it be possible to add a value to control the height of the offset of windows 11 start menu style?

I'm trying to recreate the Windows 11 look for Windows 10 (More for fun than anything), while I have the taskbar height right, it gets rid of the offset for the start menu, I tried to fake the offset with transparency

I thought that was a start11 thing (the close all windows) but turns out to be a windows thing. Some apps do it others don't :( close single is defs on my wishlist as well

1.4.2.1 totally resolves the "wait" in the beginning when it goes transparent and looks like its fighting explorer for world domination. (the changelog is as bad as windows 22h2 was... nothing in it mentions it will break / fix the taskbar thingy :P lol)

im a happy customer again :D

thanks devs!!

now just to add the ability to change the active window's background on the taskbar to highlight it more :P

I noticed you had an update right after the latest version of Windows 11 to fix the taskbar not fitting (it was shifted down on either end). Your update partially fixed that. I use a 1920x1080 laptop and hook up to a 2650x1080 wide monitor several times a day. Each time, I need to restart Explorer because the taskbar once again doesn't fit correctly. Hopefully you can look into this soon

thanks

which update are you using?

Beta 1.42 released earlier today addressed many small issues.

This applies to Windows 11 Version 22H2 (OS Build 22624.1470) Beta Insider build which was released 23-March-2023.  It was not occurring prior to this beta release.

ISSUE:  The Windows key on the keyboard will not open Start11.  It opens a new Windows 11 Start menu that is programmable. I am running Stardock11 1.42.1.1 beta.  I tried uninstalling/re-installing 1.42.1.1 beta to no avail.  It is occurring on both of my Windows 11 systems.

Every once in a while, Start 11 reacts as if it is open, even when not. This happens when I move the mouse to a window area where Start 11 should have been had it been open, which it is not. The window active at the position does not react to mouse actions, but Start11 does!

Sometimes I involuntary start an application, and in the worst case (which has happened), I trigger the restart button. When these things happen, it is evident that it is Start11 that is responding as if the menu is open, which it is not. The mouse pointer has not been close to the start button, so mouse movements do not trigger it. I have not seen any obvious trigger as to why it happens.

Windows 11, version 21H2
Start 11, version 1.42 (it happened with earlier versions as well)
WindowBlinds, version 11.01 (I think it also happened before installing WindowBlinds, but I can't say 100%)
Windows 7 style

Dual 4K displays. I have only seen it on the main display.

This is one of the risks of using insider builds. Microsoft love to make changes.

I am pleased to say the next update of Start11 which should be released soon will resolve it.

In the short term you can fix this as follows :

Go to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\Start8

using Regedit and then add a new string value called AllowWinKeyFix and give it a value of 1 and then sign out and in again.

Yes, I had. I have disabled it now, to see if there's any difference.

Start11 1.4.2 Changelog

  • Added in new UI strings to warn users about changing the taskbar size needing enhanced taskbar enabled and likewise for autohide
End of sdRohan's quote

Noting some carryover issues with autohide in the current beta, plus an additional issue. The above comment in the changelog hints at autohide concerns, but from searching the forums, it seems to relate to not being able to set large taskbar with autohide, which doesn't cover my issues. And if there is a combination of settings to alter/correct autohide behaviour, I certainly can't find it!

First, drag-and-drop to the taskbar is problematic with Start11 and auto-hide taskbar enabled, because the taskbar doesn't pop up. Currently running Windows 11 22621.1413, and Start11 beta version 1.42. Steps to reproduce:

  • Enable Start11 enhanced taskbar. Disable Windows autohide taskbar. The taskbar is visible, so I can drag-drop files to apps in the taskbar. Image here.
  • Enable Windows autohide taskbar. Disable Start11 enhanced taskbar. The taskbar pops up, so I can drag-drop files to apps in the taskbar. Image here.
  • Enable both Windows autohide taskbar and Start11 enhanced taskbar. The taskbar doesn't pop up when dragging files down. So you only have the option to pin to taskbar, and cannot drop the files. Image here.

Second, when autohide is enabled and Start11 enhanced taskbar is enabled, the start menu renders at the very bottom of the screen, and the taskbar pops up over the top, image here. Disabling Start11 enhanced taskbar gives the correct behaviour when the taskbar pops up, image here.
