Start 11 Won't Fit for Laptop Monitor Alone

Hi,

Using the upgraded Start 11 on a Win 10 device - when the laptop's screen alone is used, no external monitors attached, Start 11 can't fit.

Top gets cut off.  Screen is too huge in Modern Style.

Tried to copy your Win 7 (?) style settings as illustrated - anything higher than 56 seems to generate an error - with ONLY two rows (14) shown across the top, and the first row itself is cut off.

App works fine when HUGE external monitors are attached.

If I try to take the laptop on the road, none of the styles seem capable of working.

What do you think is happening?

Feel pretty disappointed because I had planned to work at home over the weekend - had to return to the office (external monitors) as it seemed Saturday afternoon from my remote location that I wouldn't have a start menu at all.  Sure - I could have uninstalled Start 11 - but then I would have had to configure windows OWN start menu with everything...I built into Start 11.  And, no guarantee I would even succeed at that.  Spent a good long time rotating through the 4 styles of Start 11 (and each one's MANY sub-styles) before I realized none would function correctly.  Work to do, you know, so...just cancel Saturday plans and...back to the office.  NOT what I was hoping for.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Obviously, when you on a lower resolution, you will need to adjust down the Show at least "XX" shortcuts and adjust the columns to 7 or lower.

With Windows 7/Modern style you can not do much other than that but if you on Windows 10/ Windows 11 style you can click and drag the edge of the startpanel to adjust the panel size and you can also add more pages to the startpanel. That way you can add more icons/shortcut onto the the small startpanel area.

And you can also combine tiles to make a group.

Thanks

Hi Basj,'

Any way to lose the left column?  So I can have ONLY tiles?

Any setting to make these tile ICON IMAGES bigger?  The huge space around each one seems visually inefficient.

Sincerely,

Trigo

For your first question, yes you can turn off this option.

And for your second question, you can change that icons with your own picture. For example on the screenshot above I change that tiles to use a controller picture for all my games in a group. You just need right click on the tiles->Icon>Pick custom tile image

Hi Basj,

Got it.  Not sure if I'll give the own image a go as...it would take a good wee while to do that, eh?

I feel confused.  At the default laptop screen size:

Sure...I have a HUGE monitor on my desktop but...the RATIO should be nearly the same so, right?  Shouldn't the same thing appear on the laptop screen?

I have an idea.  Tell me what you think.  Let me tell you my goal, then please advise what's the BEST way to achieve it via AUTOMATIC means - to have more than 56 icons  AND the ability to use the SAME layout whether I'm connected to my external monitors OR just the laptop alone.  An automatic way that doesn't require me to make the icons by choosing my own images.

Possible?  I'd even take a horizontal layout...but...none of these seemed to scroll?

Fingers crossed. for luck!  Need some Stardock stardust magic, please!

Sincerely,

Trigo

What is your external monitor resolution? Usually, external monitor resolution would be more 1366 x 768pixels. Usually, its start at 1920x1080 which is bigger in display space. Hence, when you use Win 7/modern style on the external monitor it will have more space on the external monitor vs the 1366x768 laptop display.

What you can do is, use the Win 7 style, since you already have those properly setup, while you on external monitor and switch to Win 10 style when you on Laptop monitor. 56 icons should be enough with 2-3 pages on Win10 style panel. Or you can use Win10 style on both. No need to do the switch.

Hi,

1920x1080 is correct.

10 to 7 to 10 to 7 would...fry my poor wee brain a bit.  It's hard enough to do the work that I have to do without greeting a new computer wherever I go! ;)

Is there any array of options you can think of that that would give me something like this in BOTH displays.  So that I wouldn't need to reconfigure every time I step out of the office?

Drag the menu wider, so that more icons are shown in one row, therefore getting lower and rearrange the icons. Solved for both resolutions.

Than, I would suggest to stick with Win10 style with pages. Win 7 will not fit your laptop screen with that many icons. Or, you can use Stardock Fences. https://www.stardock.com/products/fences/

Thanks, Basj!

Hello @c242 ! :)  Seems like that's the For either you or good Basj: how many rows of start icons can you have in the Windows 11 style you're using there.  Am I right?  If yes - do either of you know if it is possible to have MORE than two rows of Start items?

Sincerely,

Of course. You can adjust the height also.
