Start11 regularly is slow to open Windows from clicking in Taskbar

Hi folks,

I'm wondering if anyone else has come across this problem? Or, ideally, a solution!

Periodically throughout the day, there'll be times when clicking on the Window in the Taskbar that I'm wanting to bring into focus can be delayed, sometimes only be a second or so, other times it can be up to 10 to 20 seconds.

Whilst writing this post, I had it happen. I clicked on a Window (Microsoft Teams for example), then clicked in the Taskbar to Minimise it, then clicked Discord, Spotify & Edge, then clicked on a few of them again to really push it - the response was delayed by about 20 seconds, with all the commands being delayed over the following 15 seconds (Taking focus from writing this actually post. ;)

I've tried monitoring the computers performance within Task Manager whilst this is going on - CPU is below 10% total usage, memory is at 32%, & Storage is not doing anything.

The computer is a daily driver - used for both Work & Games, Application performance is as I'd expect, except this Start11. I love the product when it's working, without it - I will be going back to Windows 10.

Specs:

  • AMD Ryzen 7 3800X
  • 64Gb RAM
  • 2 x SSD's (Health OK)
  • Windows 11 Pro Build 10.0.22000
  • ASUS ROG STRIX B55-F Gaming
  • GeForce RTX 3060 Ti
  • Monitor 1 - Samsung LC34G55T 3440 x 1440 @ 165Hz HDR
  • Monitor 2 - Philips PHL 328P6V 3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz SDR

It _may_ be specific to Microsoft Office software, or more specifically, Teams & Outlook to trigger the delay - that then affects all other clicks in Start11 until it recovers. I'm certainly able to reproduce the behavior now!

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Also need to know what is your scaling factor on those monitor : 100%,125%,150% etc? Also you on Start11 V1.25?

Thanks

Just to confirm i am getting exactly the same issue.
I mainly notice it after resuming from Hibernate.

Using Version V1.25 it can be unusable at times. Restarting Explorer seems to temporarily help.

Are you using Start11 enhanced taskbar mode?

If so does the problem continue if you disable this?

I am using the Start 11 enhance taskbar yes. The main reason i use it is for the Uncombine Taskbar items and the smaller scale taskbar.

If i disable the enhanced taskbar it appears to be working ok for me, but obviously now start 11 isn't providing anything.

I disabled the custom start Menu and Button to see if this fixed it but does not.

Good morning folks & thank you for the replies.

I am using 125% scaling across both screens as of yesterday - fault still exists.Prior to yesterday I was running 100% on Screen 1, & 150% on Screen 2.

Start11 is currently running 1.25

I'm also running Enhanced Mode

Does the issue still exist if you turn that off?

Thank you,

No, disabling Enhanced Mode does make the issue go away.

Enabling again, issue reoccurred immediately.

As this is one of my favorite features - is there anything we can do to resolve this issue?

Cheers,

Simon

My guess is your issue is known now by Dev. Reply#3 above. Hopefully the issue will be address on next updates.

Sounds good to me.

I'm starting to get used to Non-Enhanced Mode - start Menu on its own makes Windows 11 tolerable. ;)

Do you have a ticketing system we can follow this bug? Or an ETA

As might have to jump to an alternative start bar solution. Ironically went to start 11 from explorer patcher for something more professional for reliability 🙈

I must admit I've been considering rolling back to Windows 10. Is there any ETA on when (if) this bug will be resolved?

Whilst disabling the Non-Enhanced Mode has made the problem go away - the Taskbar is just Windows 11 garbage. :)

I believe Start11 V1.26 Beta will be release soon. But, I am not really sure if this version will resolve this issue yet.

Do they not have a change log for the release?

Might have to request a refund and go back to explorer patcher. Never had any showdown issues there!

Also can I follow the ticket for this bug?

Just following up on any information for this?

I am also having this issue with taskbar enhanced mode on.  I only have noticed it though when I do a file copy operation.  If I have taskbar grouping enabled, when I click on the taskbar, the action is delayed is about 4-5 seconds.  If I disable taskbar grouping, mouse clicks do not respond at all until the file copy operation is complete, all of the clicks I do rapidly execute.  Like they are queued up and then released to go all at once after the copy operation is done.  I can still use win+tab or alt-tab to get to the window I want, but I would rather click the taskbar.

Please fix this.

Has Stardock abandoned the Start11?? It sure looks like.

As of now this a half baked and buggy product, especially with Windows scaling (which is practically every laptop or 4k monitor). Even the free alternatives provide (many) more feautures without bugs.

The delay with opening the start menu still hasn't been fixed. Why? Windows 11 will deliver folder support in the start menu in a week, which will make Start11 almost obsolete. I stopped using folders in Start11 because some folders occasionally simply disappear, and then I can't create a new one with a same name. Obviously some bug in the internal database which still has the same folder, but is not being displayed any more for some reason. So instead, I have to use the dividers (groups) to somehow separate apps, which looks like a long list of apps divided with lines.

To be frank, at this point, after many months of hoping that Strart11 will be fixed, I am now looking forward to the Windows 11 22H2 update and its start menu that gets displayed instantly and has a working folder support.

Yah after seeing this problem appear on many times on their forums and not seeing a fix, and also seeing as how you mentioned there's many free programs that do most of what Start 11 does, and with MS improvements to Start menu, I am asking for a refund.

I am sorry you have been experiencing problems but I am unsure exactly what you mean by a delay in opening the start menu?

It opens pretty much instantly and I am not aware of issues with its scaling support?

Likewise you seem to be the only user reporting problems with folders disappearing.

Have you reported these issues as I cannot see any posts on the forums about any of them?

The delay in opening is happening for all of us in this thread. But there has been no information on if this bug has been logged, investigated, fixed etc etc. Its all very black box.

I have asked multiple times if there is a ticket to follow.

I don't believe his report of delay is the same thing as yours.  Yours relates to the entire taskbar right, his seems to be just the menu?

There is no public facing ticket system, but worry not it is being worked on internally.  Unless a bug report is absurd (Start11 ate my dog), it gets considered by development.  Obviously the more reports we get the higher priority something gets and sometimes the issue isn't us.  The most recent example of that is dragging and dropping to the taskbar causing a crash which will also happen without Start11 but we still got reports.

v1.26 is in development now and it is expected we would see it in a public form next week.

As a heads up, we think we have identified the cause of sluggish taskbar response when using the enhanced taskbar when copying files in explorer.  Hopefully this resolves the issues others experience too as the root cause may also be the same but in this case we had a specific repro case provided to us.

It didn't cause multi second delays, but it did result in a poor user experience.

I am getting up to 10+ seconds delays on any task bar action.

Can I send any diagnostic data?

Happens a few times a day, mainly after hibernation. Once it starts though it's pretty hard to stop without rebooting. Restarting explorer doesn't fix it.

Sometime unticking enhanced task bar and enabling it again fixes it temporarily.
