[Start11] Search is extremely slow all of a sudden

Windows 10 Enterprise 21H2 / Start11 1.2

Searching for programs in the start menu can now take anywhere from 10-20 seconds. In the beta version (and all Start8 and Start10 versions) it was instantaneous. I upgraded straight from the beta, so I can't speak on 1.0 or 1.1. I tried this on a second computer and had the same issue.

All search settings are disabled, aside from 'Use Start11 search in the Start11 start menu', and I've only added a dozen or so shortcuts.

It would be very helpful if you could reply with the information we asked about your setup in your other threads.  Hopefully we can then track down the cause for you.

Well thats certainly not normal behaviour!

What other software do you have running on your computer?

Also in your Start11 install folder do you have S11Search64.exe and S11Search.exe ?

It happens even when nothing is running. I'll do a clean restart, check that resource usage is normal and only system processes are running, but still it takes a long time to search for anything.

Yes, I do have both of those files.

If you try to run S11Search64.exe does nothing happen or do you get some sort of error?

I am having this problem also.
Randomly, if I perform a Start 11 search, I will get no results for 30 seconds or more.
If I switch off Start 11 search, there is no problem.
I switch Start 11 search on again, the problem is still there.
Then, I try it later, and it works again.

The most likely explanation is something is blocking Start11 from communicating with the external search process that was added in v1.11

What antivirus package do you use?

Bit9/Carbon Black and Microsoft Defender.
But AV would not explain it working perfectly, then not working, then working again.

I have no AV other than Microsoft Defender, and nothing else I can think of that would be blocking it. Mine also goes back and forth, sometimes taking 20-30 seconds, sometimes taking less than a second, then back again. Very strange.

When it happens are you able to open taskmanager and see if explorer is using a fair amount of cpu?

Fair amount being 100 / number of cores you have, so if you had 10 cores in total then 10%, 4 then 25% etc.

I suspect the apps list is being refreshed for some reason which would explain the intermittent nature, but it should be quick unless the search indexer has been disabled?

It doesn't use any more than usual while I'm waiting for it to search, but I see a spike (~20%) as soon as the searched program actually appears. When the search results are showing up immediately, it's only around 2% usage.

I do have indexing disabled on this computer, but I always have. I tried enabling it, and it did not make a difference. My other computer has indexing enabled, and it also has this issue.

I will check mine when it happens again.

One thing that I don't think I mentioned, when the problem does occur, I can switch back to Windows search, and search is instant, then I switch it back to Start11 and the problem continues. I can do this a number of times with the same results.

This is still an issue as of 1.24. Really hoping it gets fixed.
