More Options for Organizing Your Taskbar

Little tweaks make for a better Taskbar

A couple of weeks back, we shipped the first public beta of Start11 v1.2, which enables a new feature for “ungrouping” the icons on your taskbar. While this feature looks familiar from previous versions of Windows, it’s actually an all-new taskbar that we built in-house in order to enable the functionality.

The challenge of building a taskbar from scratch is immense! There are endless scenarios that Microsoft has accounted for during the past couple of decades with its own taskbar experience. For Stardock to rebuild a taskbar that covers the many extensive experiences offered by Windows, well, to call it "challenging" is a bit of an understatement.

Now that we can control what is happening on the most important part of the Windows interface, we can implement unique experiences. One such example that will be included when we release the final version of Start 11 v1.2 is the removal of labels from ungrouped taskbar windows.

This feature inclusion was implemented after it was requested by a user in our forums and will be an optional feature with Start 11 v1.2.

The feature is a middle-ground for users with multiple iterations of the same app being opened (such as a browser or Word docs), but who prefer a compact view of their taskbar windows. While this option may not be for everyone, those who prefer to see each window open but not have their entire taskbar populated with unnecessary text, will find this feature very much to their liking.

It’s this type of feature that highlights what Stardock does best. Not only did we re-enable a feature from previous versions of Windows, but we also made it better. As we continue to work on new features for the taskbar, let us know what else you would like to see.

Would it be possible to have the ability to skin the taskbar?  Not just textures.  Making a taskbar skin would be easy enough.   Maybe just add the option to use your own image for the taskbar?

The communication about Taskbar issues is confusing all over the web, more often than not when someone says "ungrouping" they mean merely not collapsing the buttons to a single one and resulting buttons are still grouped. My ultimate goal is always 1. No collapsing 2. Labels 3. No grouping 4. Separate Taskbars for monitors and 5. Different positioning and sizing for each Taskbar with all screen edges available, and on top of that proper Start Screen

I don't think 1.2 is able to achieve all that just yet but I believe you'll keep on going forward with future releases

I am really missing the transparent taskbar. Is this a feature we can look forward to soon?

You can adjust transparency of the taskbar in Start11 (and Start10 and even Start8).  It isn't something you can do on dev/beta insider builds of Windows due to OS changes so if you are on one of those then currently you cannot adjust it.  We are still investigating if that feature will return or not.

Ok thanks. I am using a prerelease version of Windows 11. Hopefully this feature will not be depreciated in Start11.

Hey, I really appreciate that you added the ability to remove the Taskbar labels or make the font smaller. Awesome

Two other options I would like to see:

1) Right-click a taskbar item and change its name. For example, I have two Robox windows open, right-click one of them and name it Game X.
2) Add the option to move the Taskbar to the left or right. For me, the vertical screen space is more valuable than the horizontal space.

Thanks for the great work.

regarding the transparent task bar i've found an app called TranslucentTB in the Microsoft store. The CLEAR option is not quite clear but pretty close. Enjoy.

This program does not work with beta / dev builds either. The advice that is given on the store page sounds identical to what Neil has said in comment #4. It sounds like the hope is that a solution to this problem will be resolved by the time build 22H2 goes live for release.

I do not believe it works on the Windows 11 insider taskbar.  Their own issues list says so.

There ya go...

Window's 11 taskbar is still not transparent here. What is transparent is the start 11 taskbar. The tail end of the taskbar is not a normal look.

Yikes! Just got an update to 22H2 and TranslucentTB no longer works. Guess I'll have to play hide-n-seek with the taskbar for awhile.

To be more precise from 22H2 build 22581_release.220318-1623 to 22H2 build 22593_release.220402-1100

So much for Microsoft having a beta channel. It sounds like instead they have a dev channel and also a second dev channel.

We will just have to wait for the release before real fixes can come.

Does anything return the ability of having toolbars on the taskbar?
End of KENCARTER's quote

I haven't seen anything mentioned.  One thing you can do though is add a directory of shortcuts to the Start Menu an have it display as a menu, one extra click compared to a taskbar toolbar.  This is where it is on the Win7 and Modern styles, on the Win10 and Win11 styles it's a little different layout but you're still adding a Quick Access shortcut and setting it to display as a menu.
