Start11 1.1.0.1 changelog:

Keeping the internal dates to help break it up a bit.

1/10/2022
  • Updated S11 1.1 to be 1.1.0.1
  • Fix for horizontal wheel mouse swapping pages in the wrong direction
  • Fixed too small icons on Win11 style (in all lists & search, just less obvious on main page as icons bigger)
12/30/2021
  • Fixes for issues found by QA before Christmas
  • A fix for open file location not working for all shortcuts for one user
12/20/2021
  • You can now rearrange Fences groups and set icon size (win10 style) and it gets saved.
  • Also added option to lock icon positions in win10/11 menus (right-click menu)
  • Fixed folder group icons being the wrong size sometimes for Win11 menu style
  • Stopped you from being able to drag icons into Fences group from the Win10 menu all apps list
12/17/2021
  • This fixes some crashes with some edge cases
  • Makes search add priority to items you have pinned
  • Auto pins and unpins things when you use the OS pin to start option (may take a few seconds) plus unpins from OS menu if you unpin from S11 (Win10/11 menus only).
  • Adds in option to show Fences on the S11 Win10/11 menus
  • Improves performance of folder expansion animation and fixes deadlock potential issue with that.
  • Removes items pinned when the user uninstalls the app (Universal apps ONLY - Win10/11 menu only too)
12/09/2121
  • Fixes for some issues with the new folder groups such as not deleting when the last item was removed,
  • Fixes for not scaling the mini icons with icon scaling options
  • Fixed missing icons for Minesweeper
  • Made it insert new group in Win10 mode in the right column if one is missing
  • Fixed too small icons on Win11 menu all apps list
12/06/2021
  • New: Win10 and Win11 styles now support folders. You drag an icon over another icon holding down the shift key to combine them. You can also right-click on the menu and pick the option to pretend shift is down in order to achieve this should you have no keyboard (say touch device).

We are not doing this like Microsoft as their method of combining things all too often turns into chasing the target around the menu as there is natural confusion between putting an icon here and making a group/folder.
  • New: Win10 and Win11 styles now offer a right-click Icon submenu when you right-click on an icon. This lets you pick a custom image that will replace the icon. Images should be square for Win11 styles and small, medium, and large tile sizes on Win10 and 2:1 on Wide tiles
  • New: On the very first run of Start11 on a Win10 install, the existing Win10 menu will be imported for the Win10 style including folders. This will not happen for existing customers but if they wish they can import theirs by going into the registry and deleting the following keys and rebooting. Items that do not actually exist locally but are MS advertising for apps will not be imported.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\GroupContents
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\Groups
    and deleting this key :
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\Start8\CreatePinned10

Fixes \ changes

  • Fixed issue with recent apps list having a network location in it which is not accessible causing Win11 menu to appear blank for a prolonged period.
  • Mouseover correctly shows on Win10 tiles now when they use a tile image
  • Surplus line at the bottom of the W7/Modern styles when in nonrounded mode resolved
  • Tweaks to experimental tile and Universal app icon loading to better handle apps with different icons for light/dark mode
  • Added refresh icons option to Win10/11 menus to refresh icons should the user have changed icons via a tile editing app or due to OS icon cache changes
  • Reduced gap between groups on Win11 menu when icon sizes are smaller vs having a fixed size
  • Added option to Win11 style to load up tile images

Version Numbering Roadmap

Previously, we communicated plans to make the 1.1 update include features that are related to the taskbar. Because we completed many additional features ahead of schedule (folders, importing of menus, and more) we wanted to get these features released ahead of the taskbar update. To keep our process consistent, we are branding this release version 1.1 - version 1.2 is now the target build for features that enhance the taskbar.

Known issues

  • When using the Windows 11 style menu, control panel icons may appear smaller than expected.
  • Beta access is not available for 5-pack licenses under the account page.  Please use this link instead:
    https://cdn.stardock.us/downloads/public/software/start/Start11_1.1-j117-Setup.exe
  • After updating to 1.1.01, the version will still read 1.1 on the About tab of the S11 UI.  You can ensure that you are on 1.1.01 from the properties of the Start11Config.exe file:

First off I will say there are some really good things included in this build. I really like that Fences is beginning to be integrated into the start menu, it does tie in multiple software nicely. Also, I like how tile customization has really evolved in this build. On top of it being included both in windows 10 and 11 themes it also has potentially a game changing built in tile customization option that probably will change how I customize the start menu from this point on. Great job on that.

Since this is Beta, I did find a few bugs I will point out.

1. The Fences integration only detects fences on the windows start up page. It does not seem to detect fences on multiple fence pages

2. The mouse wheel is now inverted when changing pages.

- I look forward to the next build

Hi!

I have an issue with how the menues are changing languages. As the picture show I am using windows 11 in the Swedish version (In the shut of menu it shows "shut down" in swedish (stänga av) but when it expands the options menu it shows the next menu in english. So there must be a language bug.

You can also see this language problem on some of the other menus:

Settings is in english but Nätverk is not ans so on.

Windows version: 21H2 (22000.376)

Many thanks

Where possible Start11 will use the OS translations for key strings.  But it requires those strings to exist in the OS.  Some which did exist in Windows 10 no longer exist in Windows 11 as those menus may not appear in that form (often this will be because the menus used to have the underlines in them and those are no longer shown).

For supported languages we have translated those which are missing, but for languages we do not have official translations for you may have places where things revert to english.

Things like Network which I assume is Natverk are folders and thus translated by the OS itself.

It would be possible to create a suitable .lng file in the langs folder for se.lng and fill in those missing ones only and it would then use the translations you provided in the event the OS is missing them.

On point 1, are the missing fences folder fences?  I ask as only non folder fences can be added to the start menu.

On point 2, I assume you are using a horizontal wheel mouse?

So im trying to organise shortcuts in the W11 start menu.

When I add one shortcut below a row, it works fine , like this screenshot.  I can add the shortcut in the area of the red line.

Now when I try to add a second one , the first icon moves to the first row automaticly.

Is this the way it is supposed to be ?

1. That is correct. I didn't even put much notice into that being my set up. But that does answer that.

2. Also correct. the inversion is from scrolling horizontally on the mouse wheel to change pages.

The shortcuts are supposed to fill in the list left to right without any gaps.

The fact you can add one out of alignment will be a bug though a pretty minor one.

Oh too bad. I liked being able to put the icons anywhere.  Thanks for the answer though!

Hello, I'm new to the forum and may I bring two items the party – a feature request and a possible remote desktop bug.

Feature Request

Left click user icon – add a shortcut to ‘Change account settings’ (just like on the standard Microsoft Windows 10 Start Menu).

Please can the change be applied to the following Start Menus: -

Windows 10 Style

Windows 11 Style

Remote Desktop Bug

Main machine has the following option enabled

Main machine Taskbar snapshot

When main machine is accessed using Remote Desktop Connection – Start Menu does not become centre aligned

Many thanks

A couple of last things, now that I have had more time on version 1.1

*In windows 11 theme the default icons do not mesh well with the icons with custom tile images. They are soo much smaller. But on the other hand it is now much easier to add custom tiles so as long as all tiles get the custom image the look is good.

*The Lock menu is a nice new feature. But I would like it expanded to resizing as well. Usually I will stretch the size to match my icons / tiles and any movement on the size can affect the overall look.

Alot of very nice changes and fixes in Beta 1.1.  Suggestion:  I'd like to see the Taskbar clock show the day of the week if the Taskbar is set to Large.  Perhaps this should a user selectable option.  Taskbar Clock

While using Modern style Start 11 theme, the command 'Shift + Restart' does not restart Windows 11 in safe mode/recovery mode like it would with native Windows 11 shut-off/restart features.

I strongly believe in the usefulness of Start11 and I immediately purchased a package of 5 licenses.B)

it is a real shame that those who have bought 5 licenses can not download the betas like the others.

While waiting for Stardock to solve the problem of the absence of betas in the user profile, it would be a good thing to post it immediately together with these publications in the forum;)

Just like for the previous beta, the software is not available for 5-pack users. The link to download the software on the account page links to https://store.stardock.com/Controls/myaccount/This%20product%20is%20not%20yet%20available. which leads to a 404.

I have an internal ticket to have that addressed.  In the meantime, I have added it to the known issues section.

Sorry for the oversight and thanks for the feedback.

Thanks. Now I'm able to test.

Found a bug, when creating a win10/11 style folder and right-clicking it, the More menu shouldn't show, as it contains open file location and run as administrator menus which don't work, obviously. EDIT: Same with the Uninstall menu entry.

I was able to repro this and created an internal ticket to have it looked at.

I can confirm Horizontal is fixed

Windows 11 icons are still appearing a bit small. Especially compared to custom tile images on tiny, small, or medium settings

A comparison of sized small vs sized huge
