On win10, you could get all of the recent files opened by a particular program upon right clicking an icon - I don't see this in start11. Would be a nice feature, I use this often, actually

Make sure you have not disabled recent items in Windows settings or it will disable access to things like that.
Ok, I found the issue. two of my programs are portable and not located in the program files folder.
They do not display recent items, but typical installed programs do.
This is what I get from the taskbar:
and this is what I get from the icon on the start menu
the windows 11 menu shows this too, so it could be a win11 problem
it seems it treats programs that are outside of the normal program files folder differently. You can't even get the "open file location" function to work
