Start 11 Release Candidate

Feedback

Hello all.  I have been waiting for the release candidate to see if I was going to finally uninstall start 11.  Here are my (+) and (-) notes so far.  It is based a a limited look so far:

(+) seems to add an infinite number of additional pages to essentially create a scrolling opportunity.  This is great

(+) the ability to overcome Microsoft's dumb limitations on taskbar and repositioning

(-) unbelievably, the maximum and only size of the icons cannot be changed and they are even SMALLER and NOT CUSTOMIZABLE.  This alone, if not changed results in uninstalling.  It is incredibly sad and shows you do not know the windows 10 experience at all.  I will keep the license and software until version 1.  If icon size is not addressed, it' is goodbye to START 11.  I am using the START11 layout and the other layouts don't seem ti impact icon size either.

I was very dismayed at this obvious oversite.  My own start menu has customizable icon size controlled ny the mouse wheel alone.  I am amazed at this blindness on stardock's part.

Note that even the large icon size has a large footprint but that the icon itself is only 1/3 orf width of the footprint.  Not acceptable.  Also, you cannot fit two large tiles in a group because the "Show more tiles" option from settings is gone

Hello,

I have forwarded your report to the Stardock support team for their review and recommendations.

Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates.

We really do appreciate your feedback, thanks.

The icon sizes used in the Win10 style are identical to those of the Windows 10 menu.

Can you provide an example of where this is not the case?

Note thats icons NOT the full tile background images which some apps (netflix being a good example) uses.

If you prefer the Windows 7 / Modern style in Grid mode we offer a huge range of icon sizes in the settings from tiny to absurd.

With regards to the show more tiles option, we currently enforce a 6 wide grid as the Windows 10 menu does by default, but it would be entirely possible for us to put in the wider 8 wide grid that show more tiles turns on.

I'm done with this dialogue.  I did my part by telling you that the icon size is 1/3 the size of the foorprint.  That is a long way from what Windows 10 did.  And I am not going to revert to windows 10 to show you.  I am so done with you guys.

I am sorry you feel that way.

Here is a screenshot of Windows 10 :   With the exception of the items which use cutom tiles (firefox, solitaire, xbox console), the icons are the same size.  Look at the news one for example.

I know you are very keen on very large icons, but honestly ours are accurate.  We just don't currently load up custom tiles.  But for apps like say Adobe photoshop on this screenshot you can see the icon is sized the same.

I appreciate you want bigger icons and we can look to add that in future updates and we are looking to support those custom tiles too so for the apps which have them you can have bigger icons.

Those are native icons from Microsoft and are pinned only by microsoft processes.  The reason that windows 10 start was liked is that it was created by edge tile pro which did not shrink the icons to 96 picels.  It used the default 256 pixels.  Done!

I upgraded to Windows 11, and use Start11 with the menu on the LEFT, however, the Windows start menu pops up if you put the mouse in the very bottom left corner pixel of screen. Stardock, please fix this in the next update.

I love your product and have been using Start8, Start10, and now Start 11. Well done!

Other Issues

1) After creating a new page, pins still go into the beginning of page 1 offsetting the rest by one tile

2) as previously mentioned icon size is 96 pixels instead of 256

3) I do not see how, after a new page to pin to the new page instead if page 1

How are you pinning something to the menu?

If this is the Windows 10 menu you can drag items from the apps list on the left directly onto the page.

"1) After creating a new page, pins still go into the beginning of page 1 offsetting the rest by one tile"

I am also having an issue with #1. I am using the windows 11 theme and with me it is actually making the very first pin disappear altogether making me have to re-pin whatever was in the first spot. (This issue seems to have started once I figured out how to pin folders into the windows 11 theme through the search tool).

Update

1. The pinning issue is only happening on windows 10 / 11 themes

2. Pinning appears to behave normal and as it was intended to if pinned through start 11 search

3. Pinning issues arise when trying to pin apps outside of Windows 11 search program such as desktop shortcuts (This is my preferred pinning option). On windows 11 theme the new pinned icon replaces the old first icon altogether using this option.

4. Folders do not even have an option to pin to start 11 unless through the windows 11 search tool

Neil's questions. My answer are embedded within the questions in red

How are you pinning something to the menu?

I have my self made start menu comprised of iconified shortcuts.  I simply select the "Pin to Start 11 option"

If this is the Windows 10 menu you can drag items from the apps list on the left directly onto the page.

I don't do that as it is easier for me to Pin from my shortcuts, but either way the next tile should be first on page 2 if I just made page two no matter if I pin from All Apps or my shortcuts with icons applied
