Am I crazy or am I crazy

I could swear that when file explorer was opened, I was able to press the title bar's "+" sign and get a new tab in the same window.  Now when I press +, absolutely nothing happens.  Isn't that a bug?  This is happening in both windows 10 and 11.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need to know more on your system.

  1. Windows version, please use Winver.exe for full version number. Windows 10 please, Windows 11 is not compatible with current Groupy version.
  2. Groupy version installed.
  3. While you have explorer active, press "Ctrl+N". See what happen and report back here.

Thanks.

I am responding to the problem I am having on Windows 10.  I only mentioned win11 as the problem happens to occur there as well.

Groupy 1.4.9.1 is what is installed.  It just updated today, though problem exists in system before groupy maintenance

Windows 10 21H2, Build 19044.1151

Control N does nothing.  It is acting as if it isn't installed but is opening up multiple tabs with tab groups defined

Ctrl+N is something what Standard Windows Keyboard shortcut to open a new document : https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/c/ctrl-n.htm. If that is not working, than something is not working in your computer which does not relate directly to Groupy. Please check if your system has no corrupted files.

Please try the following:

  • For Win8/10 Users: Open the Start Screen, and type 'cmd'. Right-click on the search result and select 'Run as administrator' from below.
  • Type: sfc /scannow
  • Wait for the scan to complete (this can take several minutes)

Some help on how this looks should you need it: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system

If the SFC finds errors, but cannot fix them, please also run the following command in the same command prompt window:

  • dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Some help on how this looks should you need it: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-dism-command-line-utility-repair-windows-10-image

The above command should assist with replacing any damaged or problematic system files. Please note, however, since it may require restoring certain files, this process can take some time and you will need to be patient until it has completed.

Please let me know whether this resolves your problem or if you have any additional questions.

Thank you,

SFC /SCANNOW ran clean.  I check that almost daily.  Thus no further dism stuff

I think it is time for you to remote in.  If that is not part of groupy support, I have another way of doing multiple tabs.  Just let me know and I will uninstall this permanently.  Unfortunately, that will mean I will not be buying Start11 when it comes out.

Oh, by the way, I also uninstalled, reinstalled and re-activated it with no changes in the plus sign

I think I know what is going on.  Winaero, which I use has a wonderful customization for what folders show up when you display This PC.  It is the only file explorer thing where that does not work.  So from the groupy perspective, this is good!!   Will keep you informed.

So sorry, that was my browser where the plus sign was working, so indeed, groupy on my system is still a problem.

Lastly, the workaround is tolerable, but I have to open another instance of file explorer and the tabs group.  It is only the plus sign that is not working.

Hello,
Please try purge and reinstall steps as mentioned here: https://forums.stardock.com/488142/groupy-support-faq#reinstalling. Just make sure to re-download the latest version from your account. Reboot after the purged. Reinstall, and Reboot again after the installation. Retest it. Report back here.

Thank you,

As basj said the plus button does a ctrl n for explorer windows as that's an OS feature to make a new explorer window.  If that is broken on your computer then it would not work.

I suspect you have some other software installed that's registered that hotkey and so stopping the OS from creating a new window or a tweaks app has somehow disabled that hotkey.

Given it happens on two computers, can you recall what you may have installed on the Windows 11 machine as being newer would be a shorter list I assume.

I am also assuming this is an English install of Windows?

Yes, English install.  The only program that has hooks in Malwarebytes.   No other programs that I know of have hotkeys.  In  a few days, maybe will uninstall Malwarebytes and try then.  Thanks.

I'm running Windows 10 version 21H1 19043.1151 and 21H2 22000.120 on a laptop. Both are running Groupy version 1.49.1. The + button creates another Explorer tab in the same window, and Ctrl+N, as well as, Windows Key+E both create new Explorer tabs in the same window. I'm with Neil here. There is something whacky on your machines that is causing your problem. Do the Purge and reinstall basj recommended, as just uninstalling and reinstalling will not rebuild everything. B)

I believe this did it.  Sorry I missed the link earlier.  That made the difference.  Thanks to Basj!!!
