Updated Fences not working

I updated Fences to the latest version and it stopped working.

All my Win10 Desktop icons disappeared. Was able to restore with Right-click on blank Desktop > View > Show Desktop Icons.

But no Fences. Tried Disable > Enable. Reboot multiple times. No go.

Still no Fences.

I was able to fully (I hope) resolve the problem by downloading and installing the Fences 3.09 version available on my 'My Products' page.

Unfortunately, I missed a deadline because I stupidly allowed Fences to update just before I needed to submit a document I had on my Desktop and panicked when all my icons disappeared.

Lesson learned.

I have the same problem as jeff36 above, and I have managed to recover my icons after running the PURGE batch file (which could not be downloaded in Google Chrome (no override offered) but could in Edge!

So now I'm in Fences 3.09 (as 3.10 luckily wouldn't install as uninstall failed before the purge) - but without ANY of my fences. The earliest Snapshot offered only contained the icons - NO fences.

Is there any way to recover those fences and restore my icons into them (I have a lot!) without having to laboriously do it all again?

I'm unclear from the main blog whether Fences 3.1.2 is still recommended?

Thanks

Hello johnedwards1,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. But when you already back to Fences 3.09 cant you restore snapshot from 2-3 days back?

Thanks

No - as I said, the earliest snapshot ('pre-installation') just has the icons but no fences. Probably too many days have passed since the unfortunate attempt to download 3.10 (which failed, but caused the 'uninstall' failure which set my problem off).

Well, you said the earliest. Shouldn't you look for the latest one? Anyway, if it not available, than you will need to rebuild it manually. And make a habit to save snapshot after you have done any new layout and give it a name. That will be permanently save for you and will not be over written by the auto save daily layout snapshot.

Thank you,

Same here; crashing repeatedly.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. But, what is "same"? Crashing repeatedly on Fences version? More details please.

Thanks

To clarify - same as OP in the thread. My Fences install was recently upgraded to 3.10.x, and today it would crash with the error about Explorer and needing to "Enable" fences from the context menu on desktop. Upon attempting to Enable, nothing would appear to occur and the same error would repeat. I ended up downgrading to 3.9.x and I'm back to a stable environment. Windows 10 Pro.

Thanks Basj

I didn't know that so few days' backup were kept, so hadn't realised that I should also take one for permanent retention. So I'll have to start from scratch! How tiresome - it was fine before the bungled release of 3.10.

Just to be sure, can you tell me where my snapshots are stored - so I can check what's there?

However, my bigger problem now is a complete inability to uninstall ANY version of Fences (in order to install another, or the same) which came to light while unsuccessfully trying to install 3.10 - see my posts in Fences 3.10 Issue Report Thread  under Reply #146 AND #151. I'm awaiting an answer to #151 - could I, for example, be sent the correct 'uninstall folder/files' to repair mine which seem to be corrupted?

Thanks
