Multiplicity Testing

I have been testing Multiplicity for almost 30 days. I had trouble when I first started testing but was helped by the support from the Stardock Forum. I have always used the KVM mode of Multiplicity because the other mode does not work at all.

At first I had trouble with Copy/Paste, then I was able to fix it with help from the Stardock Forum. Now it does not work every time I connect. It is not consistent in other words sometimes it works and sometimes it does not.

I then had problems  connecting and using the mouse on the secondary computer. The forum helped me to fix that. Now it is not consistent in other words sometimes it works and sometimes it does not.

My Alienware 17 R3 laptop information copied from the Control Panel System

Edition    Windows 10 Pro
Version    20H2
Installed on    ‎6/‎19/‎2020
OS build    19042.928
Installed RAM 16 gig

I am at the trial version of Multiplicity 3.57.

I have installed and am now using a VNC product that works every time I connect. I have tested it many times over the past two weeks. It has not failed at all. Copy/Paste has worked every time, from Primary to secondary - secondary to primary. It has not failed to connect, primary to secondary, and being able to use the mouse to do functions on the secondary computer.

I am using a home private network. I even tried to use Ethernet cables to connect to the network router, and Multiplicity still failed to Copy/Paste every time and the connection did not let me use the mouse to control the secondary computer from the primary computer.

Over all I am very satisfied with all the Stardock products that I am using and have been using them for many years.

I do not feel confident to purchase Multiplicity and then see if it works. The trial version should work.

I forgot to mention that I used the MPPortFix zip file to make sure that the Windows 10 Pro firewall was updated correctly. As I said, I do not know why Multiplicty is not working when I need to use it, but It only works sometimes, in connections and copy/paste. I am interested in making Multiplicity work because I like the Multiplicity interface better than VNC. All the other Stardock products that I use are working with my complete satisfaction.

Then we would want to start here, on each PC:

I have already done this step as it was outlined in an email sent to me previously from Stardock support.. I used it to uninstall and purge and then downloaded a current version.

If Stardock is interested and wants to, I would be glad to trace the events with Stardock tracing software leading up to a successful connection and copy/paste and then unsuccessful connection and copy/paste.

Any effort would be done here in this thread.

Almost without fail, copy \ paste errors are firewall related of if you have Windows Cloud copy on:

If you have it on, test with it off.

Just to make sure I did not do anything wrong, this what I just did today.

1. Ran Purge MP-New bat file as administrator on the Secondary PC (Dell desktop)

2. Rebooted secondary PC.

3. Installed MPPortFix bat file as administrator on secondary PC.

4. Installed Multiplicity 3.57 on secondary PC and set it up as secondary PC.

5. Ran Purge MP-New bat file as administrator on primary Alienware laptop.

6. Rebooted primary PC.

7. Installed MPPortFix bat file as administrator on primary PC.

8. Installed Multiplicity 3.57 on primary PC and set it up as primary PC.

9. Setup primary PC with KVM mode and the secondary PC was added with IP address instead of the Computer Name.

10. Copied a file on primary machine and then brought up secondary PC and pasted the copied file. The copy/paste function worked this first time.

11. I then did another copy on primary PC and brought up the secondary PC and tried to paste it on the secondary PC, but it pasted the first file again and not the second file as copied on the primary PC. I used the right click copy function on the primary PC and then used the right click paste function on the secondary PC.

Clipboard history and Sync across devices are both off. I chose a long time ago to not sync any of my devices, PC or cell phone.

What does 'brought up' mean here - initiated the connection or it was already running (as it should be) and you clicked on it to show and paste?

Brought up means I used the sidebar to connect to the secondary PC. I jst tested the copy/paste function by changing the size of the secondary screen and used drag and drop from the secondary to the primary PC.

What I had to do is:

1. Close the sidebar on the primary PC.

2. Then Unloaded Multiplicity using the task bar ICON.

3. Started Multiplicity again on the primary PC, clicked on "Open sidebar.

4. Clicked on connect to the secondary PC from the sidebar.

5. Changed the size of the secondary PC screen size to be able to see the primary screen and the secondary screen at the same time. (I use one monitor).

6. I clicked on File Explorer from the task bar on both the primary and secondary PC's.

7. Dragged a file from the secondary PC and dropped it on the primary File Explorer and it worked. In other words, the drag and drop worked.

8. I just tried to drag and drop the second file from the secondary PC to the primary PC and it did not work.

I have found that if I close Multiplicity from the sidebar. Then Unload it from the taskbar (hidden icons), then restart Multiplicity on the primary PC, then click open sidebar and then connect to the secondary PC (IP address)  resize the secondary screen, the drag and drop will work one time and one time only.

I dont know what is going on but drag and drop should not work AT ALL for KVM connections, it only works for Seamless

That said, forget the sidebar for a moment and drag and drop (for any connection type)...

Can you KVM connect \ copy \ paste as I am doing here with just text files?

I have done more testing. You are right. Drag and drop does not work now. But it did once. Since I only have one monitor in use for Multiplicity I make the connected screen (secondary PC) take up half the screen (vertically) and I can copy/paste either way (primary to secondary or secondary to primary) every time or Multiple times.

After many tests in connecting to the secondary machine using KVM mode, I was able to control the secondary PC every time but one. When it did not work, I closed the sidebar of Multiplicity, unloaded Multiplicity (using the hidden ICON from the taskbar) and started Multplicity again from the start menu and was able to connect and control the secondary PC again when using the sidebar to connect.

I have never gotten Seamless mode to work. I can define them and put them in any direction of the Multiplicity control screen and I cannot connect to the secondary screen using Seamless mode in any direction. This does not concern me in the least because I prefer KVM mode.

On the primary PC I use a Samsung 24 inch monitor connected to my Alienware 17 R3  I7  laptop via a HDMI adapter device. So I can have a bigger monitor screen instead of 17 inch Alienware laptop screen.

Thank you for your help. the last few days.

I could be wrong here but I think you might have how Seamless works misunderstood.

Seamless requires you to have at least 2 PCs, each with at least one monitor connected to them (you can physically see them), on the same desk.  MP Seamlessly connected PCs will have the cursor transition from the Primary 'Seamlessly' to the 2nd PC.

This has more detail on the subject:

Thanks for making the Seamless connection clear.

The last three times I connected to the secondary PC from the sidebar. I could not control the secondary PC at all. I did it three times because I wanted to make sure that I did not do anything wrong.

I just tried it again for the fourth time from the sidebar. It connected but no control at the secondary PC. I read all the help items from Multiplicity FAQ web page. The box from the advanced settings that Prevents flicker from switching from full screen (higher latency) is checked.

The other reads if that fails, try windowing the connection    the screen does not show the little box at the top of the screen on the left

so I could not try that step.

So I tried it again for the fifth time and the connection worked and I could control the secondary PC. Picture of the secondary screen below: shows no box at the top of the screen to click on and hold the shift key

Thanks for all of your help.

I still do not know why it connects and does not allow control. But if I try it enough times it works.

I found out that drag and drop does work in KVM mode. This comes from a Tour of Multiplicity KVM from Stardock.

I have decided not to purchase Multiplicity.

Thank you for your quick responses.

Drag and Drop works for Seamless in MP KVM, but not for a KVM connection.
