Routinely Prompted To Re-Enter Product Key

Since purchasing and installing Fences on 11/22/2021, I am routinely prompted to re-enter my product key via a dialogue box.

This occurs every few days.  Specifically, I re-enter the product key, it is accepted, and then a few days later I am re-prompted again.  The dialogue box indicates my version is not registered.  Once I re-enter the key and e-mail address, the product is confirmed as registered.  A few days later, I am prompted again being told Fences is not registered.  Re-booting seems to activate the issue but not always.

I did uninstall and reinstall Fences in an attempt to resolve.  It did not work.

Note this was not purchased via Steam.  It was purchased through FastSpring.

Any suggestions on how to resolve are appreciated.

Thank you Basj, but this solution is not working.  Every few days I am still prompted to re-enter the key.  Can you provide a permanent fix to this issue?  It is very frustrating.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time. A "Run" dialog box will pop up, please paste the path below into the "Open" field and press OK.

%ProgramData%\Stardock\

In the folder that pops up, you should see a folder named Fences. Please delete this folder and all of its contents.

After you have deleted that folder, please attempt to activate once again and it should succeed without any errors.

Moin,

as of late I do have the same issue. It extends to DeskScapes as well. So I assume I will have to delete Fences AND DeskScapes folders located in %ProgramData%\Stardock\ and re-activate?

Kind Regards,

DD

It appears this is exactly the same repair that was provided before and did not work.  (Please refer to Reply #1 above)  What has changed that will make this effective now?  I did go ahead and perform again in case there has been a change since the reply was provided.

If that is not fixing it, then you need to ensure the license.sig is actually in:

C:\ProgramData\Stardock\[productName]

If it's missing, then almost certainly an AV \ Maleware app is quarantining it.

If that is not the case, it is there when you check, and if you are booting into multiple OS versions, it would make the license.sig invalid as the PC looks different to us.

Moin,

the issue reappeared, affecting both applications (Fences & DeskScapes). I´ve checked the respective folders, as you suggested. No *.sig files could be found. I re-entered the product keys. And voila, the *.sig files appeared.

You are proposing that an AV or malware app may cause the problem. I am running NORTON360 and have been using it for years. So I checked the history/ logs. There was no such entry stating that the respective *.sig files have had been quarantined. And I´d argue there is and has been no malware on my rig that hasn´t been detected by my AV.

Interestingly my wife´s notebook shows the same behaviour as of late. Only 2 days ago she told me, that Fences keeps telling her to enter a product key. But I reckon this might be the case for a longer period of time already, since she tends to abort prompts like this on a regular basis. ;)

Best Regards,

DD

Hi Sean,

I have tried again the very day you had posted your reply. Today, exactly one week later, the window popped up again asking for the product key.

.../ProgramData/Stardock/...    contains 3 folders:

-Fences3

-DeskScapes

-Registrations

All 3 folders are empty. Any suggestions?

End of g1017221073's quote

Then something is removing them and I can't help but believe it is an AV \ Malware app that is doing it - we have seen it before.

Have you reviewed the logs to see if that is the case?

I would also like you to PM the saslog.txt from here please:

\Users\YourAccountName\AppData\Local\Stardock\Fences3

\Users\YourAccountName\AppData\Local\Stardock\DeskScapes

Where 'YourAccountName' is your Windows account you are under.
