Icons will not stay within assigned fence

I have a number of fences on my desktop.  Within these fence are various MS Office files such as MS Word document files.  When I edit one of these MS Word files, the Word software creates a temporary file that appears in the fence designated as the default.  When I then save the edited file it moves from its assigned fence to the default fence.  The end result is that every time I edit a word file it erroneously moves from its original, designated fence to default fence.  I am constantly having to correct this error by moving every edited file back to the fence where I originally had it.

Me too.  Thought it was something I was doing.  Has happened on every version of Fences I have.  Annoying. I'll be watching for somebody who has the answer to this

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues.

If you right-click on your desktop to view and

scroll down do you see Fences as Locked with a check in front ?

see if that helps and report back please .

I checked to see if "Lock Fences" was checked.  It was not checked.

So get your Fences in order then " Lock " them and you should be OK ..

to make any changes afterwards you'll have to un-lock first .

Appreciate the help AzDude.  I wish, however, that the files would stay where you put them without having to lock and unlock the fence each time you make a change to the members.  Stardock should fix this "feature."

By the way, the fence "locking" did not fix the issue.  The fence lock just controls the size of the fence on the desktop.  It does not lock the contents of a fence.

Open Fences app see if this works for you

Thanks again AzDude.  However, I just want my files to stay put in the window where I place them.  I don't want to put all documents of certain type (e.g. Word Docs) in a single window.  The desktop is organized by task.  Each task contains a mix of file types. This issue is a bug that Stardock needs to address.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

This has been discussed in many threads in the past and the solution posted in each but it's about time it made it to the FAQ for Fences and that is what this answer will be.

Yes, as the OP stated, MSO will create newly named (thus unfenced) temp files for almost all MSO file types in the location it was opened (the desktop in these examples).  When saved, MSO will use the temp file as the new file and it's outside the Fences.

There are two ways to address this....

  1. Create a Rule and run it each time you save a file. Not at all ideal but it works...
  2. Create a folder for said MSO file(s) of the actual Desktop (in My Documents for example) and create a Folder portal to it:

Map it to the location where the MSO files are. Doing so, when the temp file is created \ then used, its all done in the same directory - thus keeping it in the Fence.
