After the most recent upgrade, last week, I am now getting Windows 10 icons on the desktop. If I click the start menu, I see what I expect, but the big ugly icons are on the desktop. I no longer have shortcuts to my task bar.
The computer is now all but useless.

Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please check if you are not in tablet mode. If you do please disable it. https://support.microsoft.com/en-my/help/4027960/windows-10-turn-tablet-mode-on-or-off
Try it and report back.

Tried that. No love. I noticed Office 365 had been updated the same day and uninstalled/reinstalled it. Now everything is good again.
