Copy paste between computers

Copy Paste between computers is mostly broken

1) Copying of any file larger than 4 GB is not supported, but gives no error message. It just doesn't work.
2) Copying of large amount of files, will slow to a stop and never finish.
3) Cut/paste behaves as copy/paste.

I don't even know where to begin. I often move ISOs between the systems, so as a temporary workaround I'm now using network shares instead. That works.

I've also had some folders not copying at all, just silently failing after the modal copy window showing up, being replaced by one with "cancelling", which closes and opens another one identical a few times before disappearing.

Is there a log to read somewhere?

I believe that is the limit but a change is being considered.

Whats 'large'?

If you are talking about 10s of thousands of files in one copy, that is a tremendous amout of seeking / read / write over any medium.  In those cases, perhaps a direct share (to a NAS) is a more practical option.

Thank you for your replies, Sean and AzDude!

For now, I've managed to work around it by using a network share between the two computers, where the same amount of files transfer without problems.

I realise that a 4 GB limit is not a problem for many. For me it's just a way to easy transfer audio images for my music production. I just wish that it would at least say something instead of just failing.

I've also noticed that some folders have failed to transfer mysteriously. Not the files themselves, just the folders. If I removed the content from the folder and moved each file independently, it worked fine. I suspect it might be an ownership problem as the files were inherited from a backup. I'd love to dig around a bit more in this, but I haven't been able to locate any log files.

As a side note: For single file copies it's fine, but a modal window for copying will lock up the active windows completely during the process, which is a real pain in the butt for larger transfers. What I see happening is:

- Copy from server to client initiatess.
- Modal window opens.
- Destination window is now unmovable, and it can't be minimized, leaving the desktop mostly inaccessible.
- Windows start menu can now only be opened using the mouse, not via keyboard.
- Web browser becomes unresponsive if the Toolbar Bookmark menu is accessed (only tested on Firefox)

As soon as the modal window closes, everything is fine again.
