Excel .xlsm files in any fence alway return to "new icon" fence when closed

I have had Fences for years and love it.  However, regardless of Windows version (7, 8.1, 10) or computer, when I open an Excel .xlsm file from ANY fence on my main desktop, when I close that workbook it always returns to the "default" desktop fence ("new icon" fence which I named "Temporary Icons"), not to the original fence.  This does NOT happen with .xls, .xlsx or .xltm workbooks.  Thank you.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Can't recreate it on my computer. The xlsm file saved in it original fence.

Please post a video grab of the issue so that we can see the issue and help from there.

Thanks

Wow!  Great support!  My .xlsm workbooks have thousands of lines of VBA code which could be affecting Fences in some bizarre way. If this file type has not been reported as problematic by other users, then it is likely minutely-specific to our workbooks, and therefore not worth trying to chase down a solution. Thank you for your assistance!

I've had fences forever.  Love the software and hard to think of working without it, however, with Excel and some sizable files everytime I save it moves over to the default new or just the desktop.  It's becoming such a burden now that I might have been tempted to delete fences as its difficult to always be looking to find where my excel file was saved on my desktop this time (I have about 100 icons on 3 monitors).

It's definetly EXCEL only.  All other MS Office apps have saved fine.  I don't have macros enabled in these work books or VBA code, but these are some heavy EXCEL files that are 20-50MB in size, tons of imports of CSV, etc...Really, hope a solution can be found.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. I don't have big Excel files to check. But I do believe you can always make a Fences rule to make sure all excel files with ".xlsm" move to specific Fence.

Here how you make a Fences rule for it.

  1. Open Fences Configure Windows
  2. Click on Sorting & Organizing
  3. Click on Certain files types to different places
  4. On "Edit A Rule - New Rule" Set: The icon's type -> is -> .xlsm
  5. Click Ok button.
  6. Rename Rule : Change the name to anything you like. Click OK button
  7. That new rule should appear on your "Type-based rules" list (bottom most)
  8. Click on "choose a Fence.." pick your destination from the menu.

This rule should work on all new icons that come in Desktop. Try it with you big files and see if it work and report back.

Thanks

Appreciate the tip, but I have multiple excel documents that sit in various fences (depending on category).  I open each Excel file 3-5 times per day, and each day they randomly save in the open Desktop area.  Unfortunately, doing it by extension won't help me in this case, but thank you for the suggestion

That works!  I never thought of that workaround.  It would be nice, however, if you would solve the basic problem.  Thank you!

Just noticed this weekend, although I mainly use large XLSM documents for Excel, I do at time use random smaller ones or ones opened with excel as a simple CSV file.   It saves out of the Fence on these documents about 30% of the time.  Should be an easy problem to reproduce by making a dozen CSV files.  Open them all using Excel.  Edit or something that forces a save.  Save the file and then view it save out of the fence.  On Windows 10 latest update it happens 28 out of 77 file saves.

Bigboyz99.

The only way I can think of is to use Portal Fences. Instead or normal Fences. And move all your excel files into each individual Folders and Make Portal Fences for each individual Folders. This will stop them from moving. It will always be edit and save into the same folder.

Thank you,

I can relate to  bigboyz99's word's! I have also been using fences like ... forever and I cannot even imagine myself not using, not working with them, that would feel really really awkward I guesss :D. I am facing the same issues as him and the author, and I have actually tried doing it by extension, and it did not work. I was kind of desperate until I found this thread. However, I also have a problem with my introduction to CSV files, could someone actually help me out with this one?! Please, I would be very thankful!

Do know that Fences V3.1, which should be release soon, should resolve this issue. You can review the Change Log mention in this thread: https://forums.stardock.com/505006
