Can't move desktop items unless I move them to a fence

I did some tinkering the last time I was in Fences. It rearranged all my icons into fences it created. And I discovered that if I try to move an item on the desktop to another spot it just snaps right back where it was. Exception: I can move it to a fence, but not just anywhere on the desktop.

For instance, my Trash icon ended up in the upper left corner. I want it in the lower right corner, where it's always been, but I can not move it there.

Please help.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please check and see if Desktop Icons Auto Arrange is disable (not selected)

Right click anywhere on desktop -> View -> Auto arrange icons
