Photoshop is the Industry Bench-mark proggy...

And at an Industry Standard Price Jafo.
Too steep a learning curve for a newbie .... no disrespect intended Your Jafoship.
IMHO Jasc Paint Shop Pro is a good beginner program and at the moment PSP7 is selling at knockdown prices.
I would think it would be worth starting in PSP7 and upgrading to PSP8 when you feel comfortable RL.
A word of caution .... don't use Bryce!

Why not use Bryce? I heard Bryce 5 was great. And I've seen some of the walls made with Bryce and they're the best out there. Is it hard to use or something?

wombat....no disrespect at all....I'm a PSP6 user myself...but the question was 'what is the best', not 'what do you use/prefer'...

Michael backwards.....the danger with Bryce is it can be 'spiffy' in use to the new user....as he creates new and wonderful [to him] chrome spheres and dolphins leaping through sunsets....but the key phrase here is 'to him'.....to jaded, psychotic moderators, one more generic Bryce could spark a bloodbath of biblical proportions....

I was thinking more on the context of the question.
I certainly wouldn't regard Photoshop as being a beginner's program and PSP8 is still loaded with bugs .... one of the fixits is a registry hack!!
Not very pleased, a good example of the consumer test-flying the unfinished product ... >
Other programs that turn out interesting wall graphics, Corel Painter 8 and Metacreations Deep Paint 2, both good excuses to buy that nifty Wacom tablet I've always wanted ....
