Windows Won't Group After Update to 1.2

Make sure to re-download the latest version again. Reboot after the purge, reinstall,  and reboot after the installation, retest and report back.

Thanks Sean. I removed the delay to prompt for grouping in the settings. I'll try the reinstall mentioned by Basj.

I just bought the whole Object Desktop suite, which includes Groupy 1.2. I installed it using the Manager and grouping just did not work.  I tried holding the windows for quite a while, I changed setting to be instant. Nothing worked.  I followed the instructions to remove and reinstall, this time not through the manager, but directly from the web site. Still does not work. I cannot group anything.

WHAT GIVES?

I already watched that video, that is why I bought the product, very slick and super-useful, if only it would work.  Fences works just fine. I have Windows 10.

Does the groupy configuration screen show enabled at the bottom left?

Open the Gropy app and if it says Off click it to turn On as Neil said above .

It is on, and I just noticed that it is partially working, e.g. for File Explorer and Excel.  But I can only get it to work when I choose the instant option. If I set it to be 1/3 second or longer, it never snaps to the group.

Initially I had only tried it on my most-often used programs like Firefox, Notepad++ and Sublime where it does not work at all.  Is there a list of programs for which it will work?

Any list would be for ones that do not and very short - the vast majority do.  

What success do you have when you set it to conditional - for example, 'Only group when shift is held down'?

For me, the majority of the programs do not work.  It works for File Explorer, Powerpoint, Edge, Excel but not Word nor Outlook, nor Notepad++ nor Chrome, nor  Sublime Text.   So that is odd. Any ideas about that?

Specifying to hold down the shift or control key before grouping makes no difference.  If it is going to work, I can always tell by looking at a single window, since there is a new line on top of the window with a single tab. For the applications mentioned above, there is no such line, so there is no point on trying to group them. WHenever I see such a line, I can only get it to work with instant grouping option. However, if I see the extra line and I specify control or shift then I can get it to work with the delay.

All in all, it seems pretty random what works and what does not. When it works, its brilliant.

Windows only get the tab above them when they are part of a group.

The exceptions are explorer,notepad, command prompts, excel and PowerPoint.  This seems to match up with the list of apps you can group which is odd.

Dragging an ungrouped app over another should allow it to create a group.  Could you post screenshots of each of the settings pages in Groupy.

I was playing around some more and accidentally found a Sublime Text 3 window grouped with a Word window. Progress. But it did not work like before. There had been an indicator, a blue thingy showed up earlier lettign me know it was about to group.  It is very iffy getting them to connect.  Its fairly random when it works and when it does not. Perhaps you can give me more specific guidance?  I made a video, but I cannot find a way to upload it from my hard drive.

Here is a link to a video where I try over and over to get Groupy to link windows together. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.  I also find that sometimes the windows snap together when I am not trying.  What is the trick to getting it to work every time I want it to and never by accident?  It all seems pretty random, which makes using the tool more than a little infuriating.

Thanks for the video. But I see sometimes you moving the Titlebar too low or too high or too fast. The Ideal situation is to click and grab/hold the titlebar and move that titlebar ontop to that other Windows titlebar for it to grab together. You will need to wait until the notification "Insert into group here" appear. Only then should you release the mouse.  The timing for how long it needed to group depend on how your set it. Thanks. I am finding that the behaviors are pretty inconsistent, and only after a few hours of playing around did I discover some consistency, but there are still random things going on. Here are my findings.

A few windows get a tab even if they are on their own (e.g. Excel), most do not (e.g. Sublime Text).  For lack of a better name, let’s call applications of the former type ‘single tab applications’ and the latter, ‘multi-tab applications’.  

When one single tab application is placed on top of another single tab application, there is a blue window and tab indicator when the windows are about to snap together saying “Insert into group here”. 

This seems to work when the setting is to instantly group windows, as well as with a delay.

A different behavior happens if either or both windows are multi-tab applications . If I drag a single tab app onto a multi-tab app, sometimes I get a blue indicator, but it is different, see below.  If I do the reverse, put a multi-tab app on a single tab app, there is no indicator at all, it is a guessing game when to let go of the mouse and hope the windows snap together, sometimes the blue indicator does not happen. The blue indicator never happens when I place a multi-tab app on another multi-tab app.

If the setting is not “instantly group windows” it is impossible to get two multi-tab applications to snap together. 

With a delay, putting a single-tab app on a multi-tab app seems to work. But Putting a multi-tab app on a single-tab app does not work.

 1.1  Summary

1.      Single tab onto single tab

a.       instant: usually works with blue “insert into group here” indicator

b.      with delay: usually works with blue “insert into group here” indicator

2.      Single tab onto multi-tab

a.       instant: usually works with blue “add this window to the dragged group” indicator

b.      with delay: usually works with blue “add this window to the dragged group” indicator

3.      Multi-tab onto single tab

a.       instant: no indicator, a bit of a guessing game, but can usually get it to work.

b.      with delay: does not work at all

4.      Multi-tab onto multi-tab

a.       instant: no indicator, a bit of a guessing game, but can usually get it to work.

b.      with delay: does not work at all

Putting this together and expressing it a bit more concisely:

1.      Putting a multi-tab on either  a single or multi tab

a.       never works with a delay, only in instant mode

b.      never has an indicator

2.      Putting a single tab app on either a single or multi tab app

a.       works with both instant and with delay

b.      has a blue indicator, but that indicator differs when placing on a single vs. a multi tab.

Sometimes the single tab applications such as Excel, Powerpoint and File Explorer do not show up with a tab as a single window.  It used to be (up until an hour ago or so) that they always showed up with a tab in a single window. I was going to make a video showing all of the above cases, but now I cannot do so because the ‘single tab’ applications do not have a tab when as a single window.  Instead, they look like this:

When this happens, they operate exactly like all the other multi-tab applications.  If I place one directly on top of the other, it might snap together and the tabs some back, but only when together. If I separate them again, the tabs disappear.  This is all very mysterious. I wonder how much of it you can reproduce.  See the following links for some of the videos I did create

I got that "Always show tabs for this type of window" option to work.   It is potentially useful but the problem happened with Excel and Powerpoint where that setting is usually on, but somehow got turned off.  Then it would go back on again, randomly.  If I see it again and can get a repeatable bad behavior, I will report back.

By the way, how do you get a quote inserted from another user? It does not work if I hit reply, and there is no option in the editor, e.g.:
