DeskScapes 10 serious bug with .wmv videos & insane GPU melting FPS!

Error report

Just upgraded to version 10 (from 8) and want to report that if you select any .wmv video there is a serious bug as the FPS is broken. This means .wmv videos play at an insane FPS causing GPU useage to shoot up to 97% making the PC unuseable unless you do not select a .wmv format background.

.wmv played perfectly on version 8 on Windows 10 with the very latest build & all updates applied. Please can you look into or fix this I have a lot of .wmv format video backgrounds I do not want to convert to 10 if possible!

If you switch the video engine mode to one of the other options does it fix it for you?

Nope nothing fixes it other than not using .wmv files for now or converting to other formats.

Its broken in the preview window as well just does not seem to work well with .wmv files right now.

That's odd as DirectShow VMR-9 is the DeskScapes 8 video engine.

Testing here is not producing any problems either.  I will get QA to try to reproduce.

Are there any specific videos it happens with?

DirectShow VMR-9
Thanks for your help Neil.  DirectShow VMR-9 does indeed fix it. The default Media Foundation setting was causing this all is good now :congrat:

AWPC,

I tested with a 25 mb sample WMV file, with sound, and could not see any issue with Media Foundation:

Any special codec packs you have been running? Did you encode the video / dreams yourself?  Either way, could you post any dreams to a cloud service (Google Drive, OneDrive, DropBox) and a link to it here?  If you did create them, the source video would also be helpful.

Thanks for your feedback.

Hi Sean,

No special codecs whatsoever its all pretty standard. I did not create them either when I ran into issues with the MS remove codecs change a few years ago I re-encoded them to run under Deskscapes 8 after MS did not include the codecs with Windows 10. Even though I have Power DVD installed (it installs the MPEG codecs and a few other codecs) many still did not run so I converted them to a Deskscapes 8 friendly codec. I have uploaded the file here if you want to see what happens when you use it on default settings.

Hello,

IF you haven't already I might advise you to install

the KLite Mega pk Codes https://codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_mega.htm

and I'm running the EVR Direct Show option and with this combo I'm

finding all my dreams running as they should in DS10 .

Even some of my older work from 2007 are running good too.

Hello,

I would also advise that if you are running WMV video for dreams

to convert those videos to AVI and using Dream Maker to make your Dreams

then you will find your dreams running a very low CPU usage and be able to

run several programs at once without pegging out your CPU .

As a Dream Maker myself this is how I do it and it works the best for me .

WMV will always run higher CPU usage than AVI .

I have uploaded the file here if you want to see what happens when you use it on default settings.

I was able to repro your issue - it seems that / certain WMV files are running a little wild with FPS with Media Foundation.

It has been bugged internally - thank you very much for the report AWPC.

I have an odd issue. No screenshot needed, I think.

Windows 10 Pro 1809, RX580 8GB graphics card, 16 GB ddr4 ram. Everything fully updated. DS 10 full release.

Each time I load a windowblind, the Dream on my main monitor goes blurry. The 2 secondaries, running the same dream, are fine.  I have to unload DS, then reapply to fix the issue.

Support:   Would a DXDiag help with this?

@ Sean

Glad to help hope you can fix :congrat:

@ Azdude

Thanks for the good tips I will use those wherever possible :)  I tended to convert to .mp4 or .mov before and both are around 4-5% GPU useage depending on the dream used. My display is @ 4K so the power draw on the system is already quite heavy! Going to try .h264 on some see how those turnout.
