Icons not in a fence move around desktop

When I run a fullscreen application that is not in my computers native resolution (1920x1080), any desktop icon that is not in fence moves from it's default location to the furthest left location that it can be on the desktop. For example if I have an icon on the top-right hand side of the screen and run an 800x600 game in fullscreen mode, the icon will move from the top-right side of the desktop to the left as far as it can go.

I am using the latest 3.0.9.11 version of fences, but this has happened on every version I have tried so far so it's not version specific. I am running Windows 7 Pro 64bit if that matters at all.

Anyway, thanks for any replies in advance and hopefully a fix can be sorted out for this issue because it's annoying having to move my icons around to their original locations every time I run a non-native resolution app/game in fullscreen.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues.

Not sure why that's happening I'm not a gamer but when it does happen and your done with the

'game and back to 1920x1080 res.

Just open your Fences app and restore a SnapShot ( double click on the one you want )

and that will restore your Fences back to right.

Thanks for the the reply and that's all fine and well but even that requires more work then I am willing to do since this is an obvious bug and needs to be resolved. Furthermore, I have never created snapshot of my screen because it changes so often that I would have 60+ new snapshots a week to mess around with. Not something I am willing to do. I just want the icons to say where they are. Not to much to ask so I would like this issue to be escalated.

TIA,
Mtcellph

This issue is still present in the latest version of Fences & the latest version of Windows 10. Is Stardock ever going to look into and (heaven forbid) fix this issue (it's only been 4 months since I started the topic) or are you just going to lock this topic like you did with the other one I participated in. Is this the standard Startdock support policy?

I have had this problem for a long time. I'm currently on Windows 10 x64 Enterprise Build 1803, Fences 3.09, Dell latitude 7490 at 1920x1080 1920x1200, and 3 24" external monitors at 1920x1200. Unfenced Desktop icons are moved each time I boot up or reconnect my laptop to my dock. EVERY time I switch this connection state I have to open fences and restore a saved snapshot (five mouse clicks and a preview later). The daily snapshots almost always happen during meetings shortly after I disconnect from my dock. I've messed with the "Layout auto-adjustments" and "Snapping / spacing", but haven't found a cure yet.

A fix would be great, but I'd even take a workaround. Maybe a command line I could configure as a shortcut that would restore a snapshot by name with no further interaction? I think this was happening with a previous version or two of Fences as well.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.  /Scott

Thanks AzDude. I appreciate it. One correction to my post above. My integrated laptop display is 1920x1080 (not 1920x1200, but that would be nice!). I've corrected in my previous post for clarity.

i think this is sort of related to my issue.  anything ever come of it?  if i place an item on the desktop.  fences literally just yanks it off to the far left.   if i try to move it manually, the minute i release the mouse button, it yanks it back.......

no way is this intended behavior.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Have you tried disable "auto arrange icons"

yea that was the first place i checked.

unfortunately that item stops working properly if you disable the fences shell extension to remove the context menu item.

somehow it ties into microsofts basic context menu entries.

after re enabling fences context menu item i could again enable or disable auto arrange.   with the fences context menu item disabled (which should be a built in option!) via registry they just show as unchecked which made me assume they were in fact unchecked.

however after an attempt to toggle them and seeing nothing happened, i figured id try re enabling the shell extension.

low and behold.

looks like i cant have my cake n eat it too on this one without stardock developer intervention.

I am also experiencing an issue with a full-screen game consistently changing my icons.  I play my games in my monitor resolution so I'm not sure why the desktop resolution changes and the the icons shift, but I didn't experience this problem until I started using fences.

I would be very interested in seeing this issue addressed.  For reference, the game I am playing is Elder Scrolls Online and the shift on the desktop happens between hitting play on the Bethesda Launcher and loading the the first screen for ESO.  Please advise or look into how this can be fixed.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please try the following.

  • 'Reset' saved settings and set the 'Store' option:
  • Create a new snapshot with things where you want them.
  • Perform an 'automatic layout':
  • Restore the snapshot
  • And disable auto arrange

Thank you,
