flat screen monitors

flat screen monitors

I know that this isn't a skins topic,( but I AM starting those soon...REALLY)... I wanted to know if it's worth getting a flat screen monitor NOW, or waiting like some of the techies in the stores are saying because the new ones coming out are(of course they are) MUCH BETTER! Does anyone know about these little munchkins of hardware? I've researched [printers, scanners, etc.) before buying them, but I'm clueless when it comes to monitors. Mine's the ol' "take-up your whole-desk" kind, and it's time to change it. Suggestions, anyone? The last years models will be cheaper, but are these new ones coming as good as they say they're going to be? THAT much of a difference? thnx

Personally I'm very happy with my TFT monitor. It sits alongside my CRT as a dual scren setup. It's a Belinea 15 inch and has inputs for DVI and standard Analog VGA. I have two PC's and can switch between a Dual screen on one or TFT on the other from the On screen menu. Cost me about £400 and I actually prefer to play games on it to the CRT. I've not noticed any of the ghosting, slow refresh etc I was warned about. I also watch DVD's on it. Because it is flicker free I believe it's better for the eyes too. One benefit I haven't seen mentioned is heat. My room is like an oven a lot of the time and an extra monitor pumps out a fair bit of heat. The TFT is a lot cooler running.

I've been waiting for my CRT to go so I can get another TFT but it refuses to pop it's clogs. :/

I have been reading recently about new mnitor display technologies which are on their way and they sound pretty exciting. But if I needed another monitor now I know what I would go for.

Thanks pjpowell...I agree so far about the 'flicker-free', and also haven't noticed any of the ghosting, slow refresh, etc. I'm just not a 'pro' here, and wondered if it was just ME 'not noticing', so I appreciate your input here. It is quite timely... And goofy as it may sound to some, I DO like the other idea of the lesser impact on the environment when one has to 'get rid of' monitors down the road.
