Office 2016 Groups

I was under the impression that you could open a bunch of spreadsheets, save the group and then Groupy would open them all back up again for you...

Am I mistaken?  It only open back up empty spreadsheets, i.e. Book1, Book2, etc, not the named ones I had open when I created the group.

Hello,

Did you saved that group?

Steps.

1) Open all the spreadsheets you wanted to group.

2) Manually group them together.

3) Save that group (Click on those 3 dot menu -> save group -> give unique name)

4) Open the group (Click on those 3 dot menu -> Saved group -> Click on the group you wish to open.)

If you navigate to C:\Users\<YOURUSERNAME>l\AppData\Roaming\Groupy you should see a number of .groupy files.

If you drag one of those into notepad you should be able to view the contents.  Has it saved the path names for each file correctly?

Groupy should save Word 2016, Excel 2016 and Powerpoint 2016 (earlier versions too for all those I believe actually).

Reply #3 Top

Yes I have looked at the *.groupy file. No it does NOT have the paths to the correct files in it... only 5 instances of excel.exe

Reply #4 Top

Same here. I Added the full Filepath to the groupy file, using notepad, in order to make it work (open the specific files).

You should see something like this..

[GroupyEntry1]
OwnerProcess=C:\PROGRA~2\Microsoft Office\Office16\EXCEL.EXE
RunElevated=0
Target="D:\Documents\Test1.xlsx"
NoPatternMatching=1
MatchingClass=XLMAIN
[GroupyEntry2]
OwnerProcess=C:\PROGRA~2\Microsoft Office\Office16\EXCEL.EXE
RunElevated=0
Target="D:\Documents\work2.xls"
NoPatternMatching=1
MatchingClass=XLMAIN
[GroupyEntry3]
OwnerProcess=C:\PROGRA~2\Microsoft Office\Office16\EXCEL.EXE
RunElevated=0
Target="D:\Documents\Sales.xls"
NoPatternMatching=1
MatchingClass=XLMAIN
[Group]
GroupCount=3
GroupLeft=153
GroupTop=111
GroupRight=1321
GroupBottom=1113
GroupMax=0

If you do not have something similar. Than, I think you have not do the steps I pointed out in Reply#1

Hi Basj, thanks for your reply. What the "NoPatternMatching" parameter means? In my my case, I have 0 in it.

Thanks!

Reply #7 Top

If you have files defined you should set that to 1

Just tried it yet again and i get this - yet again *sigh*

[GroupyEntry1]
OwnerProcess=C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\EXCEL.EXE
RunElevated=0
Target=C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\EXCEL.EXE
NoPatternMatching=0
MatchingClass=XLMAIN
[GroupyEntry2]
OwnerProcess=C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\EXCEL.EXE
RunElevated=0

NoPatternMatching=0
MatchingClass=XLMAIN
[GroupyEntry3]
OwnerProcess=C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\EXCEL.EXE
RunElevated=0
Target=C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\EXCEL.EXE
NoPatternMatching=0
MatchingClass=XLMAIN
[GroupyEntry4]
OwnerProcess=C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\EXCEL.EXE
RunElevated=0
Target=C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\EXCEL.EXE
NoPatternMatching=0
MatchingClass=XLMAIN
[GroupyEntry5]
OwnerProcess=C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\EXCEL.EXE
RunElevated=0
Target=C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\EXCEL.EXE
NoPatternMatching=0
MatchingClass=XLMAIN
[GroupyEntry6]
OwnerProcess=C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\EXCEL.EXE
RunElevated=0
Target=C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\EXCEL.EXE
NoPatternMatching=0
MatchingClass=XLMAIN
[Group]
GroupCount=6
GroupLeft=-1830
GroupTop=12
GroupRight=-112
GroupBottom=933
GroupMax=0

I edited it manually and it now works... BUT, I really shouldn't have had to edit it manually!  I have also learned that I have now reached the limit for my posts so I will not be able to reply *sigh* again.............

Since I can't reply anymore, I will assume that you have allowed the thread to be hijacked and your replies are not for me. I have PM'd you because I can't reply anymore *more sighs*

Can you tell us how you actually add a spreadsheet into a group?

From that I think you just save all blank excel sheet that why your target all set to Excel.exe.

You actually need to open up a saved spreadsheets and group it up. than saved that group.

Basj, as I have now, NoPatternMatching=0, the two excell documents opens grouped, so OK. If I set, as you point me to if files are defined, NoPatternMatching=1, then the two excell documents open but not grouped...

:-¿

Reply #11 Top

Can you try grouping all with files defined and see what happen?

Reply #12 Top

Sure, I just create a new group with the same two excell files. The groupy file call ok to both files and the NoPatternMatching is set to 1 , but when opening the group both files open but not grouped. I I edit the groupy file and set NoPatternMatching to 0, then both files open grouped, so ok...

Reply #13 Top

So now it is okay?

Reply #14 Top

It´s Ok that, when creating a group with two excell open files, the group (groupy file) calls ok to both files (that didn´t happend when I first tried 1.1). But the NoPatternMatching=1 make the files open but ungrouped. I need to change -via notepad- NoPatternMatching parameter to 0 to make the two files open grouped.

Reply #15 Top

It sounds like Excel is not telling Groupy what files are opened which is why it cannot save the files and why it doesn't group them if NoPatternMatch is set to 0 (as that's then grouping on filename only)

Is there anything unusual about your installation of Office and what antivirus products do you have installed?

What kind of user account do you have?  Limited user, administrator, administrator with UAC disabled?

Reply #16 Top

Nothing unusual. Windows Defender and MalwareBytes Premium. Admin Windows account. Files stored locally, but not on the same drive as the program. Fresh Windows installation - computer is only 3 weeks old.

What version does Excel say it is exactly?

Version 1802 (Build 9029.2167 Click-to-Run)
End of julesHHD's quote

Thanks.  That's the same version as I have here where it is happy, but yours is Click-to-Run and mine isn't.

I will ask QA to see if they can setup that version to test against as it looks like it is not returning the document names to Groupy for some reason.

I had a similar problem.

1. My excel file (MyExcel.xlsm) references another xlsm file (MyVBA.xlsm) for vba scripts. The second tab is another app (MyApp)

2. On saving the group and reopening,

  • MyApp opens fine but
  • Excel opened a blank file in the group after giving a referenced file error
  • The desired file MyExcel.xlsm opened in another window

3. On checking the .groupy file,

  • The Target filepath was set to MyVBA.xlsm and not MyExcel.xlsm
  • NoPatternMatching was set to 1 for the Excel file (it was 0 for MyApp)

4. Made 2 changes

  • Change file path manually to MyExcel.xlsm
  • Set NoPatternMatching to 0 for the Excel file

5. Works fine now.

Excel is Office365 version - whatever is the absolute latest.

Since the release of 1.11, can you still report these as issues?

Thanks,

1.11 is the current beta, Jules.  Also, you really should make new saved groups to test if you have not.

Reply #25 Top

Guess I'll need a link to the beta.... I don't have that screen. I bought Object Desktop.

nvm, I found it....
