Feature Request: Close All Button
Is it possible to add a 'x' button in the upper right which closes all applications within the current Groupy set? This button would close all applications when clicked.

Hello,
I'm agree. I just write a new post (forgot to search for same topic before, sorry). I think some more buttons like close all tabs + close all tabs except active tab + close all tabs left (right) to the active tab would be great (see Avant browser and notepad++ softwares for example).
Hope it will be added in a future release.
Thank you for the feedback.
It would be great!
Need this for sure.
Also on the single tab close don't resize the other tabs immediately but wait a second or two. You should be able to click click click X over and over without moving the mouse to close a few tabs one after eachother. Chrome does this perfectly.
We have opted to have a close all windows in this group and close all other windows in this group from the ... menu instead. This offers the functionality you want without cluttering up the UI with buttons you could accidentally click.
That's better than not having it, for sure. Can you make the three seashells menu accessible via right click on any tab, but also surface tab specific menu items like "Close other tabs", "Close tabs to the right" etc? That's a lot nicer than having to dig out the three seashells icon from wherever it ended up based on the open tabs.
Chrome does this the best imo by moving the window title to the tab bar and having those controls apply to all tabs: https://i.imgur.com/40A4Crr.png
Then having a button for new tab of this type is cool too. Be nice to do that if the windows in the group are all the same app.
But either way, it should be possible to close a lot of tabs by rapidly clicking on the X button instead of having it move all around on you as the tabs resize. Here's an example of what I'm talking about:
Chrome: https://imgur.com/a/rndLc - smooth as can be. Just keep clicking that X and keep closing the tabs you want. When you stop closing for awhile, then the tabs resize.
Groupy: https://imgur.com/a/FHfJg - closing is hard. The X keeps jumping around as the tabs resize. Half of the time you go to click the X (and click directly on the X) it actually focuses the tab instead of closing it so you have to click again.
Speaking of the three seashells menu, why does it take focus away from the group when you launch the menu? This is in v 1.02. Is that required because of the implementation of the menu? Seeing the focus flip back and forth makes it feel pretty janky instead of smooth.
I also noticed that closing a tab looses focus from the group for just a quick second too, but again, just enough to feel that jank.
Updated to Groupy 1.1 and that made stuff a bit smoother here (close other tabs, awesome).
The implementation leaves a bit to be desired, though:
- Menus jump around because close other tabs only shows if there are other tabs. Windows convention would be to show the option, but disabled. Just like Chrome does it: https://i.imgur.com/p0rFLQp.png
- Can't right click on a tab and get the menu, have to go all the way over to the three seashells menu to do it, which is weird feeling for things that refer to the current tab
The jankyness on focus/close described above is still there. As is the hard to close multiple tabs.
I noticed a new jank/smoothness issue as well. Dragging a tab starts too early. There should be a few pixel movement buffer where dragging doesn't actually switch to drag mode until you've moved 5 or 10 pixels to avoid mistaken drags.
Regarding the focus lost on the menu, unfortunately that's how windows works. The menu is not owned by the app and thus focus has to be taken away from the original app. To do otherwise risks incompatibility issues far worse than a minor loss of focus.
Similar is true when closing groups of different windows. Sometimes things need focus and it would be unwise to mess with that.
On the menu items being disabled, this has been modified for the upcoming Groupy 1.11 update.
Likewise right click to open the ... menu will work on a tab in Groupy 1.11.
Regarding dragging a tab, there was a 4 pixel drag needed before it moved, but 1.11 will up this to 8 and also fixes an issue where dragging a single tab window also needed 4 pixels to move vs 0 pixels as it should be.
Great to hear, it sounds like you've already thought of a lot of these things! I'm loving Groupy so much that I keep seeing little things that could make it better/smoother and feel "right" with Windows. Feel free to ignore if unpossible, but without further ado, here are some more ideas ![]()

It's not about the focus but the focus rectangle. You're the low level windows expert, so I don't know if it's possible to make it look like it's focused when it's not (blue rectangle instead of grey), but it seems like it should be. You're already drawing the blue "app focus" highlight around the contained window when dragging over it, why not do that when the three seashells menu is open? Guess that could wreck the app if it was doing custom draw or something, but can you detect that with a window style?
Also, why not retain the blue highlight on the GroupyCtrl window when focused? I think that's focus hopping around makes it feel more disjointed than the contained window.
The no focus view looks great: https://i.imgur.com/mMbVoGQ.png
But then you focus and the outline around GroupyCtrl disappears instead of going blue: https://i.imgur.com/btmfRtX.png ... except if the left most tab is focused and then you get blue on the left, nothing on the top: https://i.imgur.com/kPrakmN.png
If dragging, you can get a hybrid of that where some tabs have the not focused line on the top but no left line and some tabs have the focused line on the left but no top line: https://i.imgur.com/HfeFyYV.png
And finally you open three seashells and the outline around GroupyCtrl goes back to grey: https://i.imgur.com/aCwwDeg.png
Just making Groupy's focus outline consistently there instead of disappearing sometimes, and blue focus when the menu is open seems like it would be something totally under your control and increase the feel a good deal even if you can't draw on other windows.
I didn't notice it until just now, but the background dropshadow behind the app only goes up to the app window and not behind Groupy.
Another unrelated bug I just hit: if you drag a window off a group and then back on without dropping inbetween, it still makes a new group: https://imgur.com/a/Sl6PC instead of dropping into the group it said it was going to drop in to. There's also an associated display bug -- after it fails to drop back into the group, if you try to drop it in again it flubs the tab drop rendering: https://i.imgur.com/TVavIRJ.png -- drop works the second time though.
Edit: on the topic of dragging, you should be able to hit ESC and cancel a drag in process. Even normal windows can do that.
Came here specifically just to make this feature request in case someone else hadn't already. While I appreciate the option in the menu to close all it really isn't convenient. I understand the desire not to clutter the title bar as well though. Could we get the 'close all' option as a definable hotkey too? Maybe even something like 'ctrl' + mouse left click on the 'X' will close all those windows? Just something where I don't have to menu dig as it is right now.
Thank you for the consideration... loving Groupy overall!
