Here's what happened when installing Creators Update

Hello all,

After installing CU, everything seemed to be going fine until I got to the point of signing in. The screen then went black with nothing else but a mouse cursor moving around. I noticed the sound of Windows disconnecting something and then reconnecting, then disconnecting again. Not trying to be mean here but figured it might have something to do with Windowblinds, so I backed out to the logon screen and did a shift/restart to get to the troubleshooting menu and then went into safe mode. From there, I uninstalled Windowblinds 10.5. Continuing onward, I logged in again and everything was fine. Desktop and everything installed perfectly, just no Windowblinds.

This morning, I updated my copy of OD with Windowblinds 10.6. The install of Windowblinds on the machine did have one hiccup with the black screen again, and I was about to go through the uninstall process again when the desktop suddenly appeared. So far, so good.

Probably time to mention it again:

To prevent Windowblinds from loading at boot, hold down [Ctrl] while pressing [Enter] at the login screen.

We sent an email a while back informing folks of the need to upgrade to address that very issue.  Did you not get it?

I'm glad you recovered though.

Very good information. Thanks.

I just wanted to say something more on this. I've been using Windowblinds since way back when with Win '98 and never had (at least can't recall) having any troubles with it other than an occasional clash with some other program, and those have been few and far between. This is the main reason this time it caught me by surprise. I'm not on the Windows Insider fast or slow ring, but do sometimes take advantage of early releases, as I did with the Creators Update (I do an awful lot of sketching and working with graphics applications - just about anything involving 'create' catches my attention). Anyhow, learned my lesson. Now guess I'll know to pay better attention and be more careful before attempting major upgrades.

@DaveRI thanks for the information on Ctrl+Enter it got me back into windows.

I updated my laptop with the Windows Creators Update a couple days ago but only tried to actually log in yesterday. I had received the e-mail from Stardock that I needed to upgrade Window Blinds to version 10.6 and I had done that prior to running the Windows CU. After the windows update all I had was the black screen when I logged in.

After logging in using Ctrl+Enter I had my desktop back (minus all my icons as Fences did not show up). I loaded the Object Desktop Manager and verified version 10.6 on Window Blinds. Then I opened Window Blinds and changed to an alternate theme. (I got a pop up that Window Blinds wasn't installed correctly and it asked if I wanted to repair it. I said yes. Got the sytem prompt to allow changes and then it did a quick repair.) Lost the desktop again. Even switching back to default didn't restore it.

I tried to load Fences, version 3.03, using the Object Desktop Manager and I got a pop up that it wasn't properly installed and that I might have to remove it. I opened the add/remove programs window to unintelligible it and then the Fences menu did load. I wasn't able to get the fences or my icons to reappear. I uninstalled Fences. My icons were still missing. I checked File Explorer and saw they all existed in the desktop folder. Went back to desktop and right clecked. The "show icons" check mark was cleared. I turned it on and my icon reappeared.

I will play with reinstalling software tonight when I get home from work.

  • Do a full uninstall of WindowBlinds.
  • Reboot.
  • Install WB 10.6

Let me know how that goes

I had already uninstalled WindowBlinds this morning. I rebooted, re-installed, and rebooted after the install everything is working normally.

I re-installed fences after that and all my fences were back as they had been when I uninstalled the program.

All back to normal. I had 10.6 before Windows CU but it just needed a re-install to get things working right.

Unable to click on anything on Edge with CFX in use, works fine everywhere else. CFX version 2.16

Already tried a clean reinstall of CFX.

Same here. I have 3 computers, all Win 10 64 bit with creators update. I can't use Edge unless Cursor FX is disabled.

Unrelated to the problem, do you all like Edge?  It seems crippled to me every time I use it.

Nope, I still prefer IE11, the only reason I launched Edge was to see all the so-called new and improved stuff. (Turned out it was neither new or improved.)  I even had to reinstall WB's because Edge Wasn't skinning correctly.

Just finished with the Creators Update. Took about two hours from start to finish. Happy to say all of my installed programs were unaffected except IconPackager. The icons reverted back to the default ones and re-applying the icon pack cured that. Even Sysmetrix is still up and running. I thought I'd have to reinstall everything but nope...all good.

Hello,

on every single PC I run WB on, after running the Creators Update, the Window disappeared that should pop up when you press Alt+Tab to switch between running applications. I can switch between the Apps, but the Popup doesn´t show up. I reinstalled WB (latest) but that didn´t solve the problem.

Is there a workaround? Any ideas?

Bug report!

I keep specific icons on my screen. I can't move them   . I click on them and they don't go nowhere...what's up with that. I blame MS! :w00t:

We believe we have a solution.  We'll release a beta after the Easter break (targeting Tuesday).
