Broken with the latest Windows 10 update

Long time Fences user here. A recent Windows 10 (Dec 2016) update has unfortunately broken Fences 3. I run two desktops and one laptop all with Windows 10 and Fences and all three suffer from hangs or frozen desktops at the point that Fences loads. Sometimes I can solve the issue by rebooting but it does not permanently solve the freezing issue. I also uninstalled and reinstalled Fences but no joy with the same freezing problem.

I originally thought it might be a display driver issue but I had not run any recent driver updates before Fences stopped working. Plus all three computers are running different GPU's anyway. I checked my logs and the crashing corresponded to when the Windows 10 update was applied. Sadly once again Microsoft has broken another great piece of software.

Sean, was it the update on the 21st of December that did it? I've had major issues since that one was installed. Black boxes, icons doing their own thing, sometimes icons aren't clickable, Fences hangs up after booting into windows, etc. No rhyme or reason to when the behaviors happen, sometimes its a problem sometimes it's not. Was working 100% fine until the 21st of December.

I've not had that particular problem myself, but the Dec 21st Updates messed up my Wi.Fi, keyboard and mouse yet again.  I'm sick and tired of uninstalling AND hiding the updates responsible.  Every Windows Update breaks them, and sometimes other stuff.  The last round of updates broke CursorFX.  However, uninstalling it, running Ccleaner and reinstalling after a reboot fixed the issue, luckily.

Thing is, I have automatic updates disabled [I install the necessary ones manually] yet I still get the rubbish I don't want or need via Scheduled Maintenance.  Grrrr!!!!!

How did you manage to disable auto updates?

I use W10 Privacy from Majorgeeks, there is a setting within the program to disable Automatic Updates. It is a portable app so you don't have to install it.  However, there are several programs that can/will do it in the section dealing with various Win 10 Issues.  Some you need to install and some are portable, so yeah, take a look and pick which best suits your needs.

:)

Sorry, ID, I just needed to answer Uvah's question, but I'll leave it there.

I have been suffering from this problem since way before the update from December 21st, see here:

https://forums.stardock.com/478760/page/1/#3644298

To help resolve this issue, on my C drive, at the base, I created a bat file called restart_explorer.bat

This is the contents of that file:

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
start explorer.exe

Then I created a shortcut and put it on my quick bar. Whenever fences freezes, I just click this icon and it restarts explorer, which restarts fences.

As far as stopping the windows update services, you can easily do that without an additional program:

Windows Key + R, this opens the 'run' prompt.

Type in services.msc, this opens the 'services' window.

Scroll down through the list, find 'windows update', double click it.

Change the start up type to 'disabled', then stop the service.

Click Apply, then you're good, the service will be disabled.

Hope this helps.

Bingo. I remember the problem started happening a couple of days or so before Xmas. I started getting all the symptoms you listed above.  I will log a bug report when I get back from vacation in a couple of weeks.

I'm getting the same freeze-ups with the latest Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview, Fast-Ring, Build 15014.rs_prerelease.170115-1253, specifically Version 1607, OS Build 15014.1000.

I thought, like others, that it might be display drivers or other software.

However, both Fences 2.0 and Fences 3.0 (trial) make this version of the desktop completely unstable.  Fences does not appear upon a right-click on the desktop and the icons and fences either freeze or take forever to update.  Restarting Windows Explorer does not resolve the issues.

Uninstalling Fences makes my desktop operate normally (albeit very ugly and disorganized!).

We are looking into this as well as other issues MS may have caused with Fences.
