United Planets

What am I doing wrong here?

I've been playing this game for a long time, and I have never ever seen the United Planets come up. Ever.

The only thing I can think is that it comes about when you have found all of the races. I always play slow games on the largest maps, and I often don't find all the factions until late in the game. Many of my games crash before I find everyone (yay game!). However, I have finished the game before, and I've found all the opponents before. Is my game on crack?

95% sure it comes up before you have discovered all races.

There is a setting - where the UP never meets under the start up conditions. Do you by chance have that set. Or maybe set to random and you are just extremely unlucky (always getting set to None).

On your next game set it to the most frequent setting.

I believe you can also go into Diplmacy and see when it is next meeting (bottom left corner  "U.P. details" though not 100% sure it displays the number of rounds if it has not met yet.

Huh, that is weird. I always get it to come up, eventually, can take awhile in immense galaxies, but doesn't even need me to have met all majors for it to take place.

Not at my gaming PC at the moment, and can't recall from memory, but is 'enable United Planets' an option in game set up? Don't recall having seen it, and think that it is in all games by default, but have been wrong plenty of times before!

Same problem i play on a insame map with 40 major factions. In order to get the galactic coincil i have to meet half. Because of this i haven't seen it yet.

I don't really care about the UP, so therefore i always see it in my games.

However i can never get much in the way of interesting galactic events and mega events, even set on abundant. That's my problem with this game right now.

I bought the new mega events DLC - set on abundant or frequent or whatever is the highest setting, and i am on turn 250 in a gigantic map, i have gotten exactly SQUAT this whole time, gave up playing.

(I might have gotten a few unremarkable ones, and hence don't remember getting them)

Advice to star dock..... I would like a maximum high setting to actually work, and work to the point where players will start to think "geesh, i better turn that down a bit".

Update: I feel like the prom queen, I finally have a UP! It took outfitting a special surveyor to find the last couple factions (and discover my game has no minor races at all!). Thanks to everyone for their help! I guess this falls under 'weird things that happen in big games.'

The United Planets comes up and works after you meet 50% of the factions.  This can take several hundred turns on the largest of maps with the max AI...

this is one of the annoyances in game and as such would love to see any of

a) force un meeting after xx turns

b] communication treaty  (we put you in contact with any races that we have met)

c) change the way the system is calculated from number of races that the player has met to number of races that any race has met

d) change the way the system is calculated to number of races that have had contact with each other.*

race B has met Race C, and race A,

race C has met Race B and Race D    therefore 4 races have met, even though two of the races have only met 1 other race and no race has met more then 2 other races

The only thing I don't like is once the UP is called, all UP members at that point should know of all other UP members.  After all if the UP is aware of them then you should be aware of them being a member.

Seilore's comment makes sense, although I am not sure how the maps should be affected. Should all -- A) occupied planets -- B) systems with occupied planets or C) all of the galaxy explored by the UP members -- show at the conclusion of the first UP meeting? Should there be a vote on whether all UP members are to be required to provide -- 1) All UP members are required to provide the location of all of the planets they own? -- 2 ) All members are required to provide the location of all systems in which the member owns at least one planet, along with all of the planets within the system? -- 3) maps of all of the galaxy explored by each of the UP members? -- 4) Whether the composite maps from the above items, if any of them are in effect, should be provided to all members or held for the use only by the UP officials? Never the less, being a UP member should provide automatic access to all UP members for trade, and, at a minimum, it should be possible to trade map data in at least one of the above 3 forms. It should also be possible for one or both of the trading partners to be misleading, providing misinformation in the data given in the exchange.

Also, I have to question this 50% thing. It seems to me that if you have met only one UP member that you should automatically be aware of the UP and be permitted to join. Perhaps there should be an opportunity to join the UP if you meet a UP member. Perhaps this might be review-able and an automatic issue for vote at the next UP meeting, where the members can vote on whether to accept the potential new member(s) into the UP.

--- So how do I turn off the emoticons! It insists on turning my second item into an emoticon. Do I use something like "/emote off/" paired with "/emote on"?

Excellent...  I think by default they have to disclose the location of their homeworld, everything else is optional by UP resolutions...

At the moment the UP is just triggered by the Human players view, therefore no UP is going on prior to that.  In MP I'm not sure who triggers the UP event if it's one or all of the human players, however, once it's triggered it's triggered for all human players.

Personally how i use to think the rules worked would be better at least for big galaxies. Where it is the first january first after you met someone.

Yes it would nice (and logical) if all factions in UP provide the location of the homeworld.

But again - take this forum as example, you know me (as syrkres) and can contact me via the board, but you likely have no idea where I live.

According to your profile "No Location", however, I would guess US and statistically with the average Galactic Civilizations III player I would be correct.  Anyways on a different note if your a faction attempting to enter an elite group of factions (everyone in the galaxy) you would need to prove that you belong there w/ a home world ect...
