Help Please - sphere component

I need a sphere

Please help! I need a sphere that can be put into the ship editor so I can produce spherical .objgfxcfg objects

Why? I want a spherical asteroid

But isn't there one of these already? Yes, 1Planet_01.objgfxcfg. However, if it is used it produces a tiny tiny little sphere that barely shows up at all, and it can't be mixed with other asteroids.

Why can't you just load up the Planet_01.objgfxcfg file into the ship designer? I don't know, but I can't. I suppose that the .objgfxcfg files aren't all compatible with the designer.

Thank you!

Use the PromethionModel_01 model?

Or the Thulium model?

Thank you. I have actually used both models, as well as messed with some of the asteroids (didn't work so well). And I have the tiny globe. But (starry eyes) I would give them all up to have a real sphere.

I will look at doing that.

For me it would be to make a shipset of spheres.

Yes, please! The ship components are great, but getting an actual sphere is currently impossible. Odd considering it is one of the simplest shapes.

I am currently working on a shipset of atomic models.  So far, I have Hydrogen, which is the easiest. :) I am working my way up to Carbon, which will be challenging. ;) I am faking it with the spherical type parts I have found, but a true plain sphere would be a handy thing to have for some of my abstract ships and projects. I wouldn't mind a set of Platonic solids to work with as well. When distorted with the scaling parameters those could be very flexible and useful.

I have achieved this. Will try to post the new component to steam when I can.

Another update: I have the spherer and it works ok, but getting a pattern on it is another story. So far, I can make it use the asteroid pattern when zoomed out, but not when zoomed in (and the asteroid pattern looks terrible).

I am glad you are looking into this.

I was thinking this was another want that would never materialize.

Actually, I hit a snag. The file does weird things with the textures, so it won't be any good as a generic sphere. It WILL take the asteroid texture, but it looks funny. I'm counting on it looking less funny when it is tiny.

I'm sorry, I really tried!

Well i have some spheres, look for "Perry Rhodan" there are some kinds of spheres. Perhaps one could help you.

How did you do those? Those are sweet! I need a perfectly smooth globe myself, and I think I can make it work for my purpose. But there are a bunch of people who want a sphere (there is a faction called the Chrome Cohesion that could really use it).

I have his Paper Moon ship already in my subscription and have looked at it with just this question in mind.  He carefully and painstakingly stacks rings in an angular pattern to form a sphere.  Very pretty spheres actually, because they get this criss-cross texture with the different intersecting ring patterns he uses.  Extremely nice work, but not a sphere component.  Alas.
