Recomended DLC?

Wow I go this game when it was still in beta and just had time recently to revisit it.  I haven't even really played it at all.  I was just watching the forums and seeing the game develop over time.  Now there are like 10 DLC packs at 5 bucks apiece besides the mercs pack.

Jeeze man can anyone give a general run down on what is good DLC vs the ones to skip?  I'm on a budget here and can only maybe get $15 worth.  Am I missing out by not getting mercs?

The ones I consider to enhance the overall experience in order of priority top to bottom:-

  1. Precursor Worlds DLC
  2. Lost Treasures DLC
  3. Mega Events DLC
  4. Mercenaries DLC
  5. Revenge of the Snathi DLC

The rest are cosmetic more than game changers.

Hmm that really blows my budget man.  What exactly makes mercs a must have.  It's 20 dollars!

Its 4th on the list, get the first 3 :)

Mercs and Snathi have extra factions. Mercs has well Mercs, myself I never use them I just listed it due to the factions.

I'd say wait for a sale and buy Mercenaries. Two civs - Arceans and Torians - plus the Galactic Bazaar for hiring mercenaries.

The rest are more-or-less fluff - mini-DLC that placate owners of the Founder's Edition but hurt Stardock's credibility among gamers in general. They're nice in that they flesh out the game, but they're not vital for a good experience.

Eh, how so?

DLC *by definition* is 'extras' not critical to the game. They have varying degrees of "value", mostly dependent on which aspects of the game YOU personally like.  You might not want to pay full-price for all them, but there's no call for saying they somehow hurt credibility.  Sure, they could be combined in a new Expansion sometime, but that's $30 or so, and having them available as DLC in the mean time is entirely logical and correct.

Unless, of course, you think that companies should just hand out stuff for free all the time, forever.

yes yes they should

we should create a new Utopian world where people work not because they need to in order to pay bills but because they want to for the betterment of society as a whole.

or because they dont want to get another dose of the cattle prod

That must be sarcasm? here is some more sarcasm.... Yea exactly, because look how fantastic communism worked out, and the concept of no money in startrek is very intelligent and would work... even though we have no idea why it would work!

If there was no money in Star Trek, how do people gamble and pay for drinks in Quarks Bar? He was always counting is Gold Press Latnium.

yea, well that is just one of a thousand examples why no money in star trek is idiocy.

That same series DS9.... Cisco plans to retire to Bajore (however you spell it). A planet that uses money.... what will Cisco use to buy the land??????

The federation have no money. The ferangi messed it up even though they tried to buy a wormhole with worthless gold in the next generation.

The main reason it doesn't work is if you could get everything for free then very few would work and it would be hard to promote someone. Except when people wanted to be jerks with a power trip. And people complain about their bosses now imagine how much worse it would be when that is the only reason it is to get promoted.

hehehe yea, what soldier would ever tolerate getting berated by a superior officer when their not even getting paid for all their hard work????

Even now, if your working in a very low paid job, you wont have much tolerance for a boss with attitude, you will just tell him to get Fxxxxd and walk of the job. As a boss, If you want to crack the whip, you have to crack open the salary package, its that simple.

He'll just use a replicator to create the gold pressed latinum.  One of the many ridiculous inconsistencies in Roddenberry's universe.  BTW, the Ferengi were first seen in an episode where they were portrayed as evil, money grubbing capitalists, far less advanced than the Federation.  Their image was softened in later episodes.

Actually using the replicator to produce items of value is not such a silly idea..... because it is actually less problematic to imagine that the currency of the federation is energy credits. Its not observable anywhere in the series though..... except in Voyager where they had replicator rationing and the crew were trading in replicator rations.

And when you think about it.... energy is the ultimate currency of the universe

I came in here for interesting critiques of DLC, and all I saw was people praising capitalism.

Well, they kinda took my last jab and ran with it.

Actually it was the spell checker really annoying on the forums. It keeps changing what I said. Stupid tablet.

Yeah, gold-pressed latinum can't be replicated. This is something I knew, but didn't really care about.
