Hello wanted to share a quick solution for blank Startmenu Icons under Windows10.
My Problem was that all programs besides Windows own little apps in my Startmenu had a blank icon, things like VLC media player, Office tools and so, were all blank and even showed up in quick search as a blank.
Installed Applications at that time Iconpackager10 Beta upgraded from Beta to v.10.02
Start10 have no clue what version number but it was up to date since it didn’t find any upgrades.
Funny thing was that when using Start10 with the "old Windows7 style" Startmenu, all of the Programs showed up with the proper icon in place.
When changing the style to Modern or Default all of the icons were again blank.
So I did try to track down the problem.
[Press for more info warning boring] [Hide this boring stuff again]
I opened up Iconpackager restored the "default Icons" and then rebuild the iconcache.
Sadly this seems to not affect the Startmenu.
Restored default Startmenu and uninstalled Start10. /reboot
Went ahead and did the sfc / scannow ... NOPE
used PowerShell commands... boring
and i even went and made a inplace upgrade which didn't do shit (yay!)
Also deleted the iconhandler entry in the registry – Don’t do that it will probably not help you.
What helped me was renewing my index as simple as it sounds.
Hold and press the Windowskey+R (or type run into the searchbar /cortana thingy)
Now copy this text below:
control /name Microsoft.IndexingOptions
press Enter on the Keyboard
from this point you can click on change, if you want to redefine places for the index. Not a must though
click on the Advanced button and then under troubleshoot click "Rebuild" in German ("Neu erstellen") - Thank you ZubaZ for the Screenshot with the correct translation
Indexing will take some time, so go ahead and make yourself a nice cup of tea or a coffee and then check your Startmenu the icons for the programs should be back.
Hope this helps you to save some time.
cheers
