Start Menu Corruption

I recently had a problem with Windows 10 x64 where the start menu would no longer respond.  I checked the net and found that this was not an uncommon problem and then attempted many of the suggested fixes for it.  Nothing worked.  I finally had to just reinstall the whole OS.

One of the things that I noticed was that shortly before this occurred the desktop icons on my dual monitor set up had shifted from one monitor to the other.  I ended up manually moving them back to the desired monitor and the problem appeared to be fixed.  It's probably just a coincidence, but I wanted to check here to see if anyone else had experienced the same problem.

Thanks for your help,

Al

Had this happen on first install, back in Oct or Nov. The screen wqould go black as well. I ended up just doing a clean install of the OS instead of the upgrade and it solved the issue.

You say this was recent. Would it be as recent as the past week or so? and are you running an NVIDIA video card? And did you update it? If you ansewered yes to the last two, you probably got hit with the buggy update they put out, version  364.47. A lot of folks PC's did not respond well to that update, especially dual monitors. But they all got the BSOD on top of everything else. There is a fix out now, or you can just roll back like a lot of folks did.

If the NVIDIA issue doesn't fit, I don't know what could have caused your icon issue otherwise.

Thanks for the response.  I do have an NVIDIA card and did do an update.  I didn't see the BSOD, but I'll bet you're right as to that being the cause.  I guess in the future I'll wait a few weeks before installing any updates.

I came to the same decision as well.

I had started a thread the day after it happened. There is a link there for the beta fix they did, which I applied and it works fine...but since then they have done a proper fix (or so I'm told) that is available. But like you said, I'd wait.

Let the others crash and burn first and then get the fixed version..or not. If you look in the thread, you'll see a few members here are very cautious about the updates and get by just fine.

Good luck ;)

Without fences install w10 Start Button runs OK

After fence install one little turning circle appears and disappears and once again.

Nothing else. What is to do.
