question:
Is there a straightforward way to using the ship designer to add a "family" of ships? And by "family" I mean what you can pick from when creating a custom race such as "iconian" "krynn" etc that present themselves as the default visual 'style' of the race?

What I believe your looking for is a new ship style and as DeimosEvotec said Gauntlet is a good person to talk to when it comes to ship styles. You can read though the comments for his Race-mod DeimosEvotec linked as well as check out his YouTube video on creating ship styles.
