Use of icons and/or walls question

I need some help with protocol. Say I create a skin and see some icons and/or a wall I think goes good with the skin here. So I have them on my desktop and take a screenshot and upload it with my skin.I'm not talking about distributing them with the skin but they show in the screenshot. I would like to give links to the work in my comments. I know I would need to get permission to use another author's work in my creations but how does the permission fit with what I just described? I just want to make sure I don't tread on anyone's toes. I've seen links to icons, etc. in some of the comments for some of the skins but am not sure how that works.

No, you wouldn't have to get permission from the icon author since you aren't distributing them.

However, it's nice for everyone else if you provided a link to the original download for those icons so that everyone else can get them too

I believe it's ok to post other peoples works in your screenshots. Providing links to their work is also acceptable, I believe (someone will be sure to correct me if I'm wrong). It's usually considered polite to mention the artist(s) in the screenshot description.

Other than screenshots, though, permission is needed.

Hope this help...although I see someone already beat me to the answer....

And someone who had said goodbye for the night quite a while ago at that!

Thanks

I felt that would be the way to do it but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask

It is o.k. to use someone's wallpaper in your screenshots, but you must make sur it is partially obscured by your skin or open windows etc., therefore rendering it useless as a wallpaper by downloading the screenshot.
All clear now?
