[Mod] Extreme Planet Homeworld - Methane-Breather-Mod

choose gas-planet as homeworld

Allways wondered why Stardock's factions only grew on paradise earth planets...while species from space should live in different enviroments in my eyes.

After searching the forum, I found quite promising ideas here in Stardock's forum to do a step into that direction.

Got some great support from @Hereward_Hills and now built Methane-Breather Homeworld in cooperation with his Planet Traits Mod

Additional thanks goes to @Deathwynd for backing with ideas and analysis.

It is the first step, as in current state you could only choose homeworld to be extreme world. Further planned updates may bring full conversation into methane-breather factions able to settle on currently unused GasGiant worlds, while facing restrictions on oxygen worlds and of course the opposite for the oxygen lifeforms. But let's take a look on the current built now.

After installing the mod, every custom faction is able to choose gas worlds as homeworld.

In faction creation you could now choose 'Ogle System' as homeworld, which provides your custom faction a gasworld as your new home in space.

Choose Ogle System

After map creation your people start on a GasPlanet

GasPlanet Homeworld

Your new planet offers a base production. Surface shows planet Jupiter art with some workable continents. Think about them as 'floating' stable areas in current build.

Update 1.1:
- more diversification in methane planet style
- added moon
- added possibility of rings

Download MethanBreatherMod Version 1.2

and place the included mod-folder in your  C:\Users\{your name}\Documents\my games\GalCiv3\Mods\

REQUIRED installation is Hereward_Hill's Planet Traits Mod

Recommanded and fully compatible installation is Deathwynd's Planetary Diversity Mod

Compatible installation is Hereward_Hill's Alternative Star Map Backgrounds

Have fun and enjoy your new homeworld option.

Cheers!

I like your idea, but I have to say that your Jupiter idea is not convincing. If you want to create worlds for Methane breathers, you should be thinking of worlds like the moon Titan and similar rocky planets that will surely exist around other stars.

Jupiter and other Gas Giants do not have a surface per sec. Any life that might exist on a Gas Giant would have to live within the planets stratosphere. If you are intent on using the Jupiter background you will be better served to just put your hexes on the background with out the totally unrealistic continents.

On the other hand if you decided to use planets similar to methane atmosphere Titan, you will have surfaces to work with.

There is nothing wrong with imagining a species that lives on a gas planet like Jupiter, but they can't live on a surface, anymore than they could live on the surface of the sun. They would have to have to find a way to live in the atmosphere. Larry Nivan wrote a novel about such beings that lived in giant trees that grew in the upper atmosphere. The novel was The Integral Trees.

@Franco fx

Yeah, thx for your ideas. I also read Nivan's novel. Nice one!

The original 'methane' world is origin from Hereward_Hills. His idea is to have an usual earth-like planet that has serious problems with greenhouse effect, not using GasGiants as background. In my own imagination I see those continents as 'floating' stable areas...probably I should follow your advice to cut out landmasses for next version to avoid missunderstandings.

So, my first step is a mix of both worlds now, just to get it running first place. It offers the choice of extreme homeworld, the next step would be to do some background work as your suggested idea. It could be usefull for me or other modders to go deeper into enviromental diversification.

In fact, I'm yet not sure if the usual GasGiant could be used as a home for methane-breather faction tree as planned, while struggling seperated from oxygen lifeforms in the early years. When I get sure about, I could also do the basic decission weather to think about a GasGiant, it's moon or stay with greenhouse effected planet earth. Current Jupiter art on surface combined with continents is just a simple way to show you are on an extreme homeworld, while you view planet's production area right now.

Since I'm modding and playing together, I'll surely have some variation testing the other days. Updates will follow.    :w00t:

This MOD could be changed so the Andorians have a frozen planet.

Exactly what motivated me! Go ahead, give me Credit and make your very own IcePlanet variant. The more diversificated parts, the better. Lately we could combine them into a single mod file.

Sounds fine to me.

Just an idea out of segmentated programming: [Mod] Extreme Planets - and here modder's specification, in my case - Methan-Breather-Mod

While we stay with Planet Traits Mod as base, we offer diversification in the second part.  B)

Best goal might be to get a compilation of all compatible mods lately.

Info:

Generation of a planet texture without continents is quite a problem. Allready started a request thread here about. Any idea how to solve would be appreciated.  B)
