Wireless Networking Question

This obviously isn't skin related, but since there people here that are very knowlegible in networking, I thought I would give it a shot.

I want to be able to connect to the internet with my laptop computer using a wireless networking kit.

Is it possible to have a wireless laptop computer with only a wireless router and wireless PC card? No other computer will be connected to the router as a base computer, so my laptop won't be 'sharing' a connection with another system. Almost every wireless kit I look at has a 'base computer' listed in it's 'requirements' section. They all assume that there will be at least 2 computers connected to the network.

I've never setup a network before, so this isn't something I have any experience with. Can it be done? Thanks

Yes, if you have a dsl/cable modem that has an ethernet port instead of usb. Some routers also allow external modems for 56k dialup access.

Thanks troya. Yes, I have a DSL modem with an ethernet connection. I thought a wireless networking kit would work. I wonder why they claim you need a base computer. ANyways, thanks. I'll give it a go.

that depends, is it Bluetooth such as the IBM T30 Thinkpad, or is it 802.11b?

that will make a difference on which type of access-point you purchase and install.

personally I stick with Netgear, they have been around for, well, heck they used to be Bay-Networks so I guess it was back in the 70's when they started out.

Downsized and opened up the Netgear line, low price, top quality and solid support...
