Shut Up And Dance

Album: Talking Is Hard

Year: 2014

Nicholas Petriccia meets his new girlfriend at the bar in the copycat       “Shut Up And Dance.”

A stolen U2 riff opens the single, setting a familiar tone.  The chorus opens the single.  She lowers her eyes and pulls back a strand of her hair. She tells him she isn’t sure. With his hand, his lifts her chin up and tells her not to be afraid. He knows she can move really well. She shrugs and grabs his hands. She’s the one he wants to be with forever. (“Oh don’t you dare look back/Just keep your eyes on me/I said “You’re holding back”/She said “Shut up and dance with me”/This woman is my destiny/She said “Oh, shut up and dance with me.”)

The music took over and they fell in love. It was meant to be. (“We were victims of the night/A chemical, physical, kryptonite/Helpless to the bass and fading light/Oh we were born to get together/Born to get together.”)

In the pre-chorus, he can’t recall the moment he knew she was the one. But when the song was over, she had become a part of him. (“She took my heart I don’t know how it happened/We took the floor and she said.”)

                  The chorus is sung again.

She would turn around as she was dancing and he admired her back. He thought he noticed a freckle or two. She’s everything he’s ever wanted. From the first look, she took his breath away. (“A backless dress and some knee-up sneaks/My discoteque, Juliet, teenage dream/I felt it in my chest since she looked at me/I knew we were born to be together/Born to be together.”)

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

In the bridge, he can see them buying a home together and getting married. He just has tonight to make his dream begin. (“Deep in her eyes I think I see the future I realize/This is my last chance/She took my arm I don’t know how it happened/We took the floor And she said.”)

              The chorus is sung again.

The first verse is sung twice to end the single.

Petriccia gets out his Miami Vice suit and mimics every New Wave singer. While it’s great to love the decade, forming an identity outside of it is important.

The dated “Shut Up And Dance” is too lost in the 80s.
