I've played multiple games where it simply crashes (already reported and received a ticket). My non-empirical observations seem to indicate a large number of crashes occur when ships form a fleet or merge/dock with starbases.
My empirical observation is the debug.err file shows that the stack trace is generated after fleet formation.
