Ships movement and other questions

Well folks I stumbled upon Sins of the solar empire in a Half price book store.

Was looking at some strategy software and saw this game.

I will tell you that my all time favorite Game is Homeworld 1 , There was no game that i could find that even came close to living up to HW1.

HW2 I did not like at all, but HW1 was absolutely a good submersible game.

I still even play it today just because of the music, the feel as if your really in space.

But as I said i stumbled upon SOTSE, and I was so excited to finally find a game that played like HW.

In fact its on steroids compared to HW.

I like the fact that I can take my time and learn a lot.

As soon as I loaded it and started to play I was hooked , just like I was in HW.

And its even better on a High Definition 50" Plasma TV.

Sorry for being long winded, but I'm retired and now have something to eat up my time, besides my wife nagging me:)

I do have some questions on this game.

1. When my ships are defending or attacking, I notice that they seem to stay In one spot when they are firing upon the enemy, and they seem to stay in a bunch instead of breaking apart. they may follow the enemy and fire.   and also they don't seem to have any formation.  They seem confused from a distance.

am I missing somthing.

2. Is there a way to have ships follow other ships to protect it from the enemy, like a scout , ETC.

3. The music in HW really made the game to me  much more submersible, the music in SOTSE gets on my nerves, so I will turn it way down.

Also one of the reasons that I did not like HW2 was I did not like all the Talk back from the pilots, just shut up and do what your told without all the yac , yac.

I also turned that volume down.

Thats just me folks , so don't take it the wrong way, just not my favorite music to have in space.

4. So hear goes my  super stupid question, Is there a way to take the music wavs from Homeworld 1, and put them in this game.

I have done this before in other totally different games and incorporated my own music to it.

The music is nothing more than Sound wavs in a file somewhere.

Im sure I will have more questions as I Play.

to sum it up this game is totally up to my expectations - So thank you very much, and after i get a handle on this version i will be getting the newer ones.

Thanks.........Robert

1. Its the way they operate but there is a way to mod the game so that they move around though some rebalancing is required (there was a mod that did this but its out of date).

2. Not really

3. No worries. I have a personal mod that has all the music replaced myself.

4. Yes, yes there is. You can modify the Sound File in the game files area though recommend building it into a mod form and dropping it in the mod file so that you won't mess up the main game.

Mod folder, go to mods tab in game, enable the mod. Then you can turn it on and off whenever you like. See here for more details.

Yup, that is the original game. There has been three expansions since, Entrenchment (adds lots of new defensive stuff) Diplomacy (more options with other players) and Rebellion (a big stand alone expansion that adds titans, new game modes and lots of other things). That music mod was designed for Rebellion IIRC but it probably will work with the original, but Rebellion added some new music tracks so there may be a few tracks that will not play for you.

End of quote

Technically, if you right click on another units ships will start following that unit, though this doesn't cause that unit to take less damage so its not really protecting it.

GOA is correct, they just added music as the went so you will not hear the tracks added for later versions.

Actually you can do #2. If you give a ship a move order to another friendly ship, they will follow it and attack ships that attack it =D

I've done this before to set up escorts for my trade ships. Though my mod does have less ships per trade port =P

^^

In theory that works for tagging support ships to key assets like caps, titans, and SBs...in theory...I haven't found it to work too well, in part because the autocast of repair abilities is problematic....

Need to micro more. tagging a few ships to follow is pretty good, but once attacked you should zoom there and micro your movements.

Yeah, micro improves your chances as always. It's handy being able to make 'escorts' though. I tend to do if for Colony ships. Make a group of combat ships guard the colony ship and they do an all right job of protecting it.

They seem to prioritize enemies that attack the colony ship (though it might just be me thinking that is the case =P )

This is mostly in my SotSS mod though; due to the standard 'frigates' being fast autonomous fighter craft they make excellent escorts. I don't play vanilla sins much these days

The other thing you can do is make pretty cool looking convoys by making ships follow the next in line.

So say, battleship followed by cruiser, followed by a frigate followed by a colony ship and so on.
Not practical in a real game but it is cool looking =P

It would be nice to have a proper guard option that makes ship take up a formation around the protected ship though.
I hope for sins 2 we get some proper formation and tactical options in the fleet menu

Thanks for te info.

I got the homeworld mod , thanks for that.  got it working. thanks.

just to be sure I got the information correct.

there is no formation to put the ships in, they just all bunch up together, is hat correct.

What i liked about HW1 was that when they were attacking there enemy, i could take the curser and surround my ships and hold down the control command and then use the curser and surround the enemy ships , and my ships would quickly attack and split up fire then go back out return and shoot.

It just does not look realistic when they just sit there all In a bunch and shoot, and they are not in any type of formation.

In real life planes make a pass, then shoot then turn around come back , pass and shoot again.

Even when you start building planes and they come out of the factory they go to there waiting spot and not line up.

I like the way the game is over all, but the fight scenes are not realistic to me.

And I don't mind micro managing , but when you have a lot to do , that can be overwhelming.

Just my thoughts any way, but I will continue on so that I can learn as much as possible.

Are there any modes out there to date that can help make the game better.

Thanks.....Robert

There was a mod that changed ship behavior to do 'firing runs' though I'm not sure if it is up to date. It was called 'dynamic combat' or something.

They have a sort-of formation, basically just line up in a wall/block formation (different ships in different rows) but it is less than ideal.
I've wanted proper formations (like sphere, delta, X etc.) since this game was released but alas it is not likely to happen. Maybe in sins 2.
