DesktopX

Something Taking DesktopX's Place?

I've just got comfortable using DesktopX and now it's being dropped. Is something else taking it's place? Woe is me! :'( 8(| *_* :wc:

You need to visit the forums more often SpicyGirl, news of DesktopX moving to legacy status is at least a year old I believe.   :sun:

DesktopX was retired several months ago. I hate it as bad as anyone, but "progress" happens.

It isn't being replaced, but Winstep, Rainmeter, and Xwidget might be a good thing to try.

I also like Aston2, it's like DesktopX and WindowBlinds combined. I hear good things about BlackBox as well.

I just got back into customizing my desktop. Lost my Mom after a lengthy illness, so no time for checking out the forum. Glad to be back, just upset about losing my Mom. I was care giver for the past 13 years.

Sorry to hear of your lose SpicyGirl, please accept my condolences.

It's just my opinion mind you but I think with the release of Windows 8 and 8.1 the emphasis for changing the desktop interface has lost some appeal.  It might return with Windows 9 depending on what Microsoft decides to do.   Most of us are in a wait and see mode.   :sun:

Does aston 2 change the window frames too?

By the looks of it Aston2 is about as dead as DesktopX.  Last updated in 2010 from the looks of it assuming I saw the right website.

Well, yeah, but it can still be purchased. I like it. Not as well as DesktopX by any means. I doubt it works on Windows8. XP, Vista and 7, yes.

No. It only gets the taskbar, wallpaper, and start menu, and has widgets and panels like Winstep. I posted a screenshot in the desktop thread of Aston2 along with Camo MyColors running for frames. And IconX as well. All legacy stuff, looks good though.

I would not recommend Winstep either. Jorge (developer) has been pretty much AWOL with it for well over a year now.

But it works well. Actually, it works as well as it ever did. No reason not to use something, hell, SMX is still used, and look how long since it's gotten any love.

If you like it, use it, as long as it works.

MyColors and IconX no longer supported, but still work a charm on XP. Same with RightClick, ObjectBar, DesktopX, etc.

I realize the OP isn't using XP. Just saying that just because an app is no longer upkept does not make it unuseable.

While it is true, it is important everyone goes into it with their eyes open.  If there is no support and you are ok with that then great, but if you need support but it does not exist then that's a very different case if you have paid for it.  That's why SD stopped selling DesktopX rather than just leaving it as-is.

I really like XWidget, especially because of it's framework.

Some widgets of XWidget are so "familiar" with Stardock's products. I wonder where are those raw materials came from.   :|

I don't trust a software vendor that is using OneDrive as the source of downloading their software. Highly tacky.

any way I like the XWidget great potentialities  ! :)

Downloaded xWidget.  So far less than impressed by the depth (as opposed to sheer number) of widget types.  Of course with 56 pages of widgets to wade through I might find a surprise or two.

With regard to Jorge and Winstep, I recall he had some health issues, it think resulting from an accident.  So if there have been no updates in a while it is probably due to that... and obviously through no fault of his own.  Regardless, though, I still use my Winstep products and will continue to do so because they work well and serve my needs well.

Hopefully Jorge recovers completely and he can resume his work with Winstep Xtreme in the near future. :)

Mornin' starkers. Its 3:45 in the am here. What time is it in Oz? And I thought I was the early bird.

Starkers, Jorge has completely recovered and is all over Facebook. Looks to be having a great time too...lol. Go Jorge!!

I have texted with him and I don't think he has any immediate plans to do anything with Winstep.

But, currently, I can't find anything that needs updating with Winstep, other than maybe the weather module comes and goes.

Oh, and it needs a skinning engine.
