I keep getting the popups to upgrade to Windows 8.1. But will the Start8 button automatically appear after the upgrade? So far my laptop has worked perfectly and I DO NOT want any problems due to an upgrade that is probably not necessary. Do I even need to upgrade to 8.1?

No problems after installing Windows 8.1 Update 1. It is a required update. To receive future OS updates/security fixes after MAY, you must have this update installed.
There is a sticky on the top of this forum, saying there is a new version of Start8 compatible with Windows 8.1 Update 1. It works fine.
You are still supported by Microsoft if you have stuck on 8.0 though.
Start8 should work on 8.0, 8.1 and 8.1 Update 1 as long as you have a recent version. 1.0 would not like the changes in 8.1 for example.
Thanks to bodean & Neil for replying. I have just finished installing Windows 8.1 and everything went smoothly although somewhat time consuming. I am happy to report that the Start8 button is right where it should be and is working great, just like it always has. Earlier in the year I read SOMEWHERE on some forums that there were problems with the Start8 after installing the windows upgrade....also some folders were lost, the Start8 did not even appear, yada, yada, yada. So that was my biggest concern as I am not very smart about computers. I am a happy camper!
Just to clarify, the forums WERE NOT on Stardock. Just some garbage forums I picked up while trying to research.
