Transcendence

Anyone seen it? Whats your opinion? Do you welcome our new AI overlords? :D

I thought it was quite good. Interesting premise to say at least, which probably could be executed better, but i am not complaining. One of the better movies i have seen in cinema lately. Definitely better than 300.

Excellent movie. I thought Tom Cruise was great in it.

LOL...Tom Cruise isn't in it. You must be thinking Johnny Depp.

I'm wary of it.   It looks like it wants to be a chistopher nolanesque type movie.   The even rented Morgan Freeman.

The premise as laid out by the trailers seems to give away the whole plot of the movie:

Captain sparrow is dying and is saved into a computer program.  Then he dies.   What's like being alive man, really?  Is this computer program Johnny Depp really Johnny Depp now because the program does stuff just like Johnny Depp would do.  Do people have souls or can computers replace people?  Besides replacing them on the telephone and in factories and stuff.   What is being alive?  What's real, man?  Am I my smartphone?

The premise just seems kinda tired to me.

Yes, this begs the body/brain  - spirit (self consciousness) connection.  If there is no 'soul' then whence comes spirit?  Is our sense of consciousness due to soul, or is it merely the consequence of a sufficiently complicated/intricate nest of connections/neurons/etc. communicating with one another via electrical and chemical messengers?  If the former is true, then soul can only come to a mechanical/electronic thinking computers IF that being (-ie god) grants them a soul.  If the latter is true, then a sufficiently complex computer would also become sentient - and we will have created our own successor species.  Such a self conscious electronic species will push us to extinction.

If and when such a thing, sentient computers, ever happens think of the consequences. They'll be treated just like any other who is different and most likely be consigned to the role of a slave. Slaves have this nasty habit of rising up in revolt against their masters. History is replete with that sort of thing and is still an ongoing issue. Lets not get into it.
