How is this game now? Is it fun? Is it stable?

I feel like getting a new game. I bought the game before FE (forget the name) a while ago, but never played it much. Found it a bit slow, a bit bland, but showed lots of promise. Sadly my laptop went poof so could not play it. Finally got a new laptop and been playing some old games. Want something new and surprised to see FE (which I new was coming out, but did not know there was stuff after it).

So how is this FA:LH? Is it fun first of all? How stable is it? Reading the forums, but not seeing what I want to know.

I see FE, is on sale for $5 on Steam, but is it worth the $40 for FE:LH? I don't mind paying more. LH looks like a lot of fun, but want to make sure it is.

I want a building game like Civ or Moo. I love the individual characters you can build in the game before FE which I forget. Can you build more than one character? Can you steal tech? How about sabotage? Is there spies? I can't remember if there is or not? How is the tech tree? Is it varied?

Off to you tube to see what I can find there, and come back and hopefully my questions have been answered.

*edit* Also how about Naval. I think I remember the name of the game, Elemental. I was suppose to have naval in it, but was taken away. Was it but in FE? I was looking forward to in in Elemental and sadden it was taken away.

So many questions, no bullets...

  • How is LH with regards to stability and fun?  I find it fun, and pretty much all the frequenters of this forum agree (or they wouldn't be here.)  If you like 4X fantasy games, you'll probably like it, but of course everyone's taste is different.  As for stability, while some people do have stability problems, IMHO, at this point most people currently experiencing those problems have an underlying system issue.  This was not necessarily the case previously, but Stardock has put out several stability enhancements in patches and most people seem to see improved stability as a result.
  • Is LH worth $40 vs. FE for $5?  LH is definitely a better game overall, but it's not so radically different that you wouldn't recognize it as essentially the same with some (important) tweaks.  A few major mechanics have changed, but the basics are all the same.  Also, they're only (apparently) patching LH at this point, so if support matters (or mods, since most modders are on LH at this point) you're better off with LH.  At one point buying FE got you a discount on LH, but I think that's expired...
  • Is it a building game? Yes.  You build
    • Cities (pick whether to and in which order to build buildings, and placement of cities subject to terrain considerations)
    • Units (design unit traits and equipment, based on tech unlocks)
    • Heroes (choose traits in a skill tree, and add equipment found through questing or bought in stores)
  • Can you build more than one character? Yes, assuming you mean heroes.  You can have several throughout the course of a game, and each progresses individually.  You only have one sovereign though (though for most purposes they're interchangeable with other heroes.)
  • Can you steal tech? No.
  • Sabotage? Not per se, but you can hinder you opponents with spells, and in war you can destroy their resource improvements.
  • Spies? No.
  • Tech tree - there's a single tech tree with two "flavors" - one for Empire (evil) and one for Kingdom (good).  It's 90% the same, with a few tweaks, mostly for flavor.
  • Naval - in the scenario yes, but in the main game, no.

In short, I recommend it if you like 4X games.  It's worth playing, as it's one of the better entries out there.

Thanks Crastioowa. Sorry about no bullets. Don't have them on the other forum I go on so didn't know I could use them here.

I got the game after watching some videos. I was lucky, it was on sale for $10 on Steam. I got all the DLC as well. So total I payed $20. So far I like it. My Sovereign died within 10 turns. I guess I should be leery about investigating every ruins eh? :P

I just wish there was some naval combat to the game, and spies. I love playing the spy game. But that being said, I think I am going to like this game a lot.

Thank you.
