Gone retro

Hi all

After 12 months on Win 7, I decided I missed all the great old skins of the past (some don't display perfectly on 7). Bought a second-hand PC with XP & enough grunt to run OD properly & was immediately back in the 90s & 00s. No offence to current skinners but the 'skinability' then just made the skins so much more interesting. Since I bought most of the cool skins then I can now enjoy them again - thanks to all skinners then & now!

There are some truly awesome skins for XP. Not to mention IconX that runs on XP.

Have fun!

XP was much more receptive to customization than 7 or 8. With the exception of a couple of skinners now, the quality of what IS being put out pales in comparison though to a FEW of the skinners works of that era. I fully understand the gist of the OP and have to agree.

Brilliant skins, neone6, but just a little difficult on my fading eyes unfortunately.

Po, I thought I recall you did some window blinds but couldn't see any on your page. Will try IconX though.

Thanks for your comments.

My apologies, Po, was confusing you with Snidely Whiplash somehow.

Me too, but I didn't decide so.  A few weeks ago I had a major mishap with my PC and lost them all... every single WB, IP, CXP and every Winstep theme... all my stored skins.  It shouldn't have happened but Acronis True Image reformatted my backup drive and began to install a system backup on it.  The backup image was supposed to have been restored to my OS drive, a SSD, but that's not what happened and I lost 300 gigs of data.  Acronis say they have never heard of such a thing and essentially dismissed it... which to me was no better than calling me a liar, but I swear it happened and I'm not happy my case was not taken seriously enough.

I did perform a recovery operation with a couple of undelete type programs but only a handful of recovered items were viable, thus leaving me to re-collect those skins I loved the most.  Worse still, I lost hundreds of photos and documents as well.  Fortunately, my sister has most of the photos so not all is lost there.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I am refurbishing a PC to put XP on, not just for the purpose of using those fav old skins, though it's a prime motivator.  Another reason is to have a setup to play some of the older games that do not play so well on Win 7 or 8.  We have a Myst boxset that isn't comfortable on latter OSes, so XP is it.  I will have it all updated with the 3 service packs, but it will not be connected to the net so I'll not worry about internet security or anti-spyware packages.

Starkers...the safest way to 'restore' an image is to unhook any 'important' drive....just in case...a mistake at that time is sort of catastrophic.  I can't say that having proggies that may list drives as drive 0....drive 1, etc might just get confusing.  It's had me wearing the 2 condoms 'to be sure to be sure' more than once....;)

Yeah, looking back on it now, I wish that I had unhooked all the other drives when restoring the image, but at the time I didn't think it necessary as True Image had always performed its tasks faithfully before.  Like the guy from Acronis said, it was a one in a billion chance and that he'd never heard of it before, so it's not like there were any prior examples/any pre-warning.

It was explained that maybe True Image searched for the largest free space and installed it there instead of the original location... not that it was of any consolation to me.  Besides, I had it set to restore to the C: drive, so I'm not necessarily buying that as a reason anyhow.

Oh well, no use crying over spilt milk, I just gotta suck it up and get on with things.

Be prepared for all conditions, dress in layers. ;)

As for the OP, I bought a yard sale eMachines that will only run XP for $20, did a few upgrades and use it for a media center in the living room. The blinds I can use go way back to before I became a member here, so I can enjoy skins I would otherwise have to pass on.  Also, most of the ODNT suite runs quite well on it, especially the Legacy apps. Major win!

Nope, but you did ask 'where's the fun in that'... and I was kind enough to answer with something informative and useful.
