Greetings! There's been a lot of news recently on Star Control and we want to make sure we have answers to some of the most common questions.
What is Star Control?
Star Control is a sci-fi action/adventure game set in the future where humans and aliens are trying their best to get by in this crazy old galaxy.
Where did Star Control come from?
The original Star Control (1 and 2) was developed by Paul Reiche and Fred Ford and published by Accolade. During its development, Paul and Fred developed extensive historical lore for their universe that we'll hereafter call the Ur-Quan timeline.
For Star Control 3, Accolade chose to make it without Paul and Fred's involvement. For this reason, we do not consider Star Control 3 as cannon to the Ur-Quan universe timeline. Star Control 3 is considered its own universe within the Star Control multiverse.
How did Stardock get involved?
Accolade was acquired by Atari and in 2013, Atari sold Stardock it's rights to Star Control which included the publishing rights to Star Control 1/2/3 and all relevant trademarks and copyrights that Atari held. Stardock has been making and publishing PC games for over 20 years including Galactic Civilizations, Entrepreneur, The Political Machine, Links Golf OS/2, Starcraft: Retribution, Sins of a Solar Empire, Demigod, War of Magic, Fallen Enchantress, Legendary Heroes, Ashes of the Singularity, Offworld Trading Company and more.
What is Stardock's plan for Star Control?
We will continue to support and maintain the original franchise (1/2/3) and use StarControl.com which will support the entire Star Control multiverse (including Star Control 3 as well as obviously the Ur-Quan universe).
What will the new Star Control be like?
It will be an action/adventure game in the same vein as Star Control 2 / Star Flight and other games of that classic genre.
Will the new Star Control have humor, music and the light hearted fun mixed with dark interludes that we saw in Star Control 2?
That's the plan.
Will the Ur-Quan Masters and other related communities be involved?
We hope so. As we get moving, we hope to bring in as many people as we can from the community to work with us. Half the enjoyment of making a new Star Control game is that, as fans, we want to build something that will become a classic and stand the test of time.
When will the new Star Control be out?
Not for awhile. We began pre-production in 2014. Prototype will be in 2015. Alpha 2016. Beta 2017. We should have something to show people in time for the 25th anniversary (late 2017) of Star Control 2.
Will the new Star Control have the original aliens?
Probably not. Here's why: The aliens and lore are owned by Paul Reiche and Fred Ford. We have a license to use the aliens and lore but as we do not own them, we would not consider anything we did to be canon. Star Control 3 was an example of the aliens, story and lore being used without their involvement and you ended up with space cows (I'm not kidding).
It doesn't make sense to go back and remake the story of Star Control 1 and 2 because there's already an HD remake of the Ur-Quan Masters available for free.
Even if we did decide to make the new Star Control be a continuation of Star Control 2, it would be very confusing to new players.
That isn't to say the original aliens and story won't ever be in a future Star Control game but we have no intention to try to extend the Ur-Quan story line without Paul and Fred's involvement and they're pretty busy with Skylanders.
Thus, the Star Control games exist in a single multiverse with each individual universe having its own story.
If the new Star Control won't have the aliens from Star Control 1 and 2, does that mean the Ur-Quan story is over?
No! Paul and Fred have stated that they would like to one day return and make their own sequel to the Ur-Quan Masters. When that day comes, in whatever form, it may or may not be as part of a Star Control game (it's up to them how they want to do it). But Star Control and the Ur-Quan story are separate. The Ur-Quan story predates even Star Control 1.
How many Star Control universes are there?
Infinite. We plan to provide in-game crafting features so that players can (as part of their gaming experience) create and share their own universes with their own ships, aliens, stories, etc. The only constant would be your character that travels to them.
Our goal with Star Control: Origins and beyond is to provide a platform for amazing space adventures. Adventures with great stories, colorful characters and exciting conflict.
What would be the long-term dream of Star Control: Origins?
We want to bring back the open universe space adventure/exploration genre with this. That's why so much of our development has been focused on crafting tools to let players create and share their own adventures.
Star Control: Origins has its own lore, aliens and story explore. But we could imagine players being able to eventually get many other stories from any and every sci-fi universe that wants a story told in the Star Control style. Imagine a Babylon5 Star Control or a Firefly Star Control.
Star Control was very lucky to start out with the amazing story and characters of Paul Reche's Ur-Quan universe. And while elements of the Ur-Quan universe may again be in future Star Control games or expansions, we are very keen on the idea of creating a game that can support many different universes within it.
