Rinse and Repeat Combat

AI ranged troops are dumb

This is a game I really enjoy. The one thing that I think should be improved is how AI ranged troops continue to plink away at my sovereign ( who easily shrugs off the attacks) even though my armored louts are standing right next to them getting ready to chop them in half on the next turn. Every combat against the AI tends to unfold the same way making the combat much easier than it should be. Does everyone experience this?

No.

The AI always seems to focus on my most vulnerable units: wounded ones or units with no armor.

Almost exactly like it should. The only thing it does not seem to use in it's calculations is potential threat. But it has a hard time calculating threat anyway, so it's possible it does try to account for that as well.

Anyway, 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

The tactical AI has evolved greatly over the years.  While it may not be perfect in every scenario, overall it is really quite good, and can offer up a good challenge throughout the course of a game.  If all that remains of the enemy are archers, or they have been engaged in melee, they are doomed anyway, so who they attack is pretty much moot.  However, if they are attacking units that are less of an overall threat, then you possibly have an issue that should be reported.

I personally would like to see a lot more troop abilities select-able in the design of units which I believe will help counter this. If you could actually choose a "taunt" ability which forces adjacent enemies to only be able to attack that unit you could actually make a lot better use of heavily armoured sword wielding tanks (eg. Inferno Juggernaut in HoMM6). With a lot more skills for basic troops added, you would eliminate the rinse and repeat combat because you would have a lot more tools at your disposal, as, presumably, would the AI.
