People, Test Please

People of the forums, if you notice the following things about this program, please speak up and say something here:

-On hdmi connection, windows becomes unresponsive for about one minute or two. Clicking on the taskbar will result in windows crashing and restarting.

-Icons somethings leaves your folder portal you made for it and goes into another or either goes straight out of the portal and onto the main desktop.

I've sent this in to be looked at but all I'm getting is the same circular questions over and over again. Would you please say something in this post to let them know that it's not isolated to just my computer. We already did the scannow and the purge and nothing is wrong with my computer. Pitch in.

(do not respond if you did not try it please)

What OS? Specs? 64 bit or 32 bit?

Need more info if you want help.

But, if support has already been troubleshooting for you, they're the best help you're likely to get.

7 64-bit. More likely I would like to have ANYONE no matter what the system to have their fences on when they plug in their hdmi cable into an external monitor who's resolution is lower than where the hdmi cable is coming from.

Toshiba Qosmio x875-Q7290

Intel Core i7 3610QM

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670M

16gb ddr3 dual

So, by these words you are running a laptop?   More info is needed. I run a dual boot system with Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. I have 4 monitors connected and sometimes plug an HDMI cable into my 32 inch LCD HDTV and I have no problems like you describe, although your description is vague.

Yes it's a laptop. I did post my specs like you asked... what other info am I missing considering the usage of the word vague?

That should do it. Usage of the word "vague" was pertaining to your original post.

But as I said before, if Support can't help you, you're probably out of luck.

If I were you, I'd give them another shot. I assume you did post a support ticket by email?

support@stardock.com

Or, you can try this:

Otherwise, maybe someone will drop by here that can help you further.

Windows crashing, or explorer?

I'm betting explorer. Windows crashing usually does not result in a auto restart.

yes, explorer. it doesnt crash if you don't click on the taskbar. but if you don't click on it, it'll take 2 minutes for the cursor to turn back normal (explorer to become responsive) when you're hovering over the taskbar with the mouse. if you already had a folder open, you can still click on whatever is in the folder but still not in windows explorer. but if you have nothing open and try to right-click on the desktop background, the options will not show until the 'stall period' is over.

Also (different observation), when first booting, fences is not initiated. Icons are scattered everywhere. A few moments of boot up and then fences will activate and then everything will get into place. Shouldn't it already be activated when windows is started?

I've seen a few threads here throughout time talking about how the icons jump out of place sometimes but nothing was ever done about it. I've had this problem ever since I first got the program. Even on a HP laptop that I had that I sold.

^ that is correct.

shinra358, just a couple of questions.

When you get the Explorer crash, could you give us a screenie of your Task Monitor processes tab?

Which version of Fences do you have? When was it last updated?

How much RAM do you have?

Might be a good idea to make a backup ASAP, and then to do a chkdsk /f /r as an Administrator.

Taskman.exe isn't part of Explorer.exe ...;)

When I get the crash, i can choose to restart the desktop and the program readjusts itself to work normally. So I took the snapshot when it was frozen instead.

The version that was just released the other day. All versions did this anyway.

16gb as stated above.

Don't need to do chkdsk. I've done it plenty of times since 2012 and have had 2 machines, one amd and one nvidia. Nothing was wrong with my machine. Nothing is wrong with my machine.

You don't see the taskbar in the pic because it was frozen. I unplugged hdmi while it was still frozen and replugged it and that's what happened. I pressed on the taskbar for it to crash purposefully to get it going faster but when still connected to the external monitor, doesn't seem to reset until I unplug the hdmi. When I unplugged the hdmi afterward, screen turned completely white until I chose to restart the explorer and then everything got back into place correctly.

Tested and corrected. The snipping tool can't be accessed, but the print screen key does still work.

I had to go test my statement, found I was wrong. How did that happen?  ;)

A few quick words, as I don't use Fences 2 (Fences 1works just fine for me and does all I need it to do)

For the OP;

What graphics drivers? Have you tried others?

Have you been to the Toshiba site to see if it is a reported issue with HDMI use?

HDMI to a monitor, or a TV set?

Plugged in, or on battery?

To everyone else: I think the OP wants others to attempt to replicate the issue, rather than offer advice on troubleshooting, or in other words, DO try this at home. ;)

Here's a pic of what the desktop looks like when I unplug:

Here's a pic when I plug and replug and am still connected to hdmi:

That cursor means that the desktop isn't ready yet and we even have fences glitch up like this something when explorer is frozen.

I gotta ask....are you actually running MSE, SuperAntiSpyware, and WinPatrol all at the same time?

Or are those just services?   Sometimes running multiple antivirus/malware/antispyware programs simultaneously can wreak havoc with a system.

A few quick words, as I don't use Fences 2 (Fences 1works just fine for me and does all I need it to do)

For the OP;

All drivers.

HDMI works fine without fences. Temporarily turning fences off, problem is gone.

Laptop to TV. Laptop resolution is 1080p, TV resolution is 720p.

Plugged in, battery ~ both.

Well, if you have fences on both monitors, and you unplug the HDMI, all the fences would naturally go to the remaining monitor, and I could see how this would cause a problem.

I'd suggest turning fences off while plugging/unplugging.

MSE, Malwarebytes, and Winpatrol are the full versions. Superantispyware is trial version. Full version of superantispyware can't work along side the others because it's active protection conflicts. So I just scan manually if i finish a scan with the others first. No, that doesn't cause the issue. I've been using this combination fine since 2001. Even on my old P4 desktop.

When hdmi is plugged in, I have it so that the laptop monitor turns to off while it goes to the tv monitor.

That's what I do now and that is impractical which is why I'm here.

Well then, do that before connecting/disconnecting the HDMI, problem solved.

EDIT:Sorry, didn't see your previous reply. I think you will need to decide which is the most impractical. Disabling fences, or tolerating the crashes.

Windows 7 is a great OS, but it isn't perfect.
