Unused units defending city are killed off

I had 9 units defending a city. City is attacked and due to some unknown restriction 4 of my best units can't take place in the battle. Militia take their spots I guess.

City is defended successfully but in the screen showing the results the 4 units that couldn't take part are killed by the game.

WTF??!!! Rage quit time.

I was having this issue too but my units didn't die they were just unable to participate in combat

Have only encountered this bug once (in 1.3), but it was on one of the enemy cities. 3 units (including Magnar) couldn't participate and got listed as Killed after the fight.
