Decor8 1.06 is now available with support for Windows 8.1

Decor8 v1.06 has been released today with various improvements including Windows 8.1 support.

Updated:

  • Adds support for Windows 8.1 RTM
  • Added setting for Windows 8.1 RTM to disable the darken effect for the app list
  • Moved Parallax mode to the 2nd item in the list
  • Fix for Parallax mode under some non-English OSes
  • Tweaked to handle the right side color preview better on Windows 8.1
  • Note: Decor8 on Windows 8.1 can no longer customize the number of rows of Modern Start menu items (support for that has been removed from Windows).

If you have already purchased a copy of Decor8, you can get the latest version from the Stardock store (https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products) or from https://stardock.cachefly.net/Decor8_setup.exe.

Note: The update links for the in-app check are updated and work from an older build. Older installers will also prompt that there's a 1.06 and ask if you want to get that.

When choosing a standard windows color scheme, decor8 1.06 applies it but if I open a window on the desktop it looses that color scheme. A black color is present now instead of the chosen color scheme, also displays a black color at the Login window.

It should be working just fine.

Have you rebooted since installation?

Which background have you set?

I have rebooted.  I tried to set a background through decor8.  I can't get the colors to work, backgroud tile color, accent color etc.  It's like the program is not responding to anything.

It worked fine until I updated.  Tried uninstalling, reinstalling, rebooting, etc.

I also have a persistent issue with my customized login image not appearing when I log out. It shows up fine when I first start my computer or lock the screen, but not when I log out.

I am using Decor8 1.06. Just updated from Windows 8 Pro w/ Media Center ---> Windows 8.1 Pro w/ Media Center [64-bit] on the official release date. Never used the Preview version of 8.1.

I can set the color to, say, Green. The Start charm will turn Green. But it loses its setting every time there is a re-boot. In addition, my Lock Screen is fine with my custom image, but when I click on it to sign in, the screen is black, rather than green. This was not the behavior before the 8.1 update.

I am sorry to say you would need to contact Microsoft regarding that.  The OS (at least with 8.0) has a bug relating to the application of lock screen backgrounds in certain situations.

A lock screen is set by Decor8 in the same way a wallpaper is, once set we have no control over how or when it is displayed.

Have you set a background in Decor8?

Also make sure the UI says 1.07 on the about page.  If it says anything other than that you should go to the store and download the latest standalone installer for Decor8.

Mine is 1.06.  If I go to the store the only option going that route is to buy it for $4.99.  I already bought it.  The way I downloaded was I logged in my account and went to  "My Downloads" there I was able to download 1.6.  How can I get 1.7?

Just download the 1.06 again.  It is really 1.07.

No I just rechecked, what I download and install is 1.06.  This is both on the setup file name and what is stated as the version in the About section after I install.  So how are you getting 1.07?

I'm having similar problems. Whilst the background and accent colours do change, other functionality isn't quite as it should be. That was 1.06.

Just tried downloading from the my account page; still 1.06. Checked the file downloaded and whilst the digital signature is more recent it installed, again, as 1.06. And the issues I've been having haven't been fixed.

Edit: Nope, my issue has gone away, one way or another. Ignore me.

I stealth-edited my post, I misreported after the update/reinstall, whichever it ended up being.

Ignore me :)

Whilst I'm here, is there any chance of a feature to allow us to modify tile sizes more-so than Microsoft currently allow? And specific tile colours/layouts?

It's still acting wonky for me, if I choose yellow as my accent color, it shows up as purple.  Also the option to change the background color of the tiles vanished.  My saved color schemes from before are there but I have no way of changing background tile color or text color anymore.  If I choose a color scheme that I have previously created, eg one with a black tile background, the background tile colors are still stock like a rainbow.  Jeese!

Ahh I see the issue.

The option to change the background colour of tiles and of text is no longer provided on Windows 8.1.  This is because Microsoft decided that non modern UI tiles should be coloured based on the icon they have rather than a single stock colour.  The text colour has to remain white because the OS has a limitation in how it handles the text colours and so anything other than white is liable to cause problems.

Likewise the option for altering the number of rows was removed as Microsoft removed support for this from Windows 8.1.

Regarding the bright colours, it seems there is also an OS issue with colours which have a large green component (reproduced without Decor8).  We will modify Decor8 to internally block colours that trigger this in the next update by bringing down the channel below the trigger point.  I don't think we were aware of that issue, so thanks for letting us know as in general use with automatic colour schemes it was unlikely to show up.  I suspect it is an overflow issue in the colour handling in the OS.

Microsoft removing the control over the standard tile background colour is frustrating for us too and should we find a solution to this we will of course update the software to include it.

This is the biggest reason that I use Decor8 ( aside from custom start screen background which I can now do through 8.1 ).  Looking forward to the time where it will be implemented again.  Until then, I guess I'll be in bright motley color land of Microsoft tile backgrounds, I guess there are worse things in life.
