Register game problem

My friend gave me a copy of the game to the Steam. I registered an account but I can not run the game. I get an error: "Erro activating the product"

He can't activate the game when launching I think, so that is not Steam issue. You must contact Stardock Support.

In the error message reads: Please ensure the serial number entered is associated with the email you used and attempt to activate again. 

But I do not have the key of the game - that's the problem
